The Padres selected Ahmed's contract on Sunday. Ahmed is back in the majors and will provide infield depth in the absence of Mason McCoy, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with back inflammation. While Ahmed has been in the San Diego organization since Sept. 1, he never made an appearance with a minor-league affiliate and was instead working at the team's complex in Arizona. He had hit .232/.271/.300 in 69 games between the Dodgers and Giants this season.

Ahmed signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Sunday. The 34-year-old elected free agency last week after being designated for assignment by the Giants, and he'll continue his 2024 tour of the NL West with San Diego. Ahmed has played in 69 games between the Dodgers and Giants this season and has a .232/.271/.300 slash line with two home runs and two steals.

Ahmed was designated for assignment by Los Angeles on Monday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Ahmed has seen his playing time dwindle over the last few weeks, totaling only 24 at-bats so far in August. Following the return of Tommy Edman (wrist) and Max Muncy (oblique) from the injured list Monday, the club has elected to send the veteran shortstop to the waiver wire.

Ahmed is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. After signing a one-year contract with the Dodgers on July 24, Ahmed had started at shortstop in 11 of the club's ensuing 12 games, but he's faded into a reserve role following Miguel Rojas' return from the injured list Wednesday. Now on the bench for the third time in four contests, Ahmed is a candidate to lose his spot on the roster once the Dodgers return the likes of Tommy Edman (wrist), Max Muncy (oblique), Chris Taylor (groin) and Mookie Betts (hand) from the injured list.
