  Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Mondesi (knee) has been shut down again, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Mondesi resumed baseball activities at the beginning of August and had recently advanced to facing live pitching, but his surgically-repaired left knee is apparently barking again. The 28-year-old speedster hasn't appeared in a game at any level this season, and time is running out for him to do so in 2023.

  Mondesi (knee) has progressed to facing live pitching at the Red Sox's spring training complex in Florida, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. He's also been running and taking grounders and it's possible Mondesi could be ready to play in games within a couple weeks. Mondesi just recently came back from a lengthy shutdown period as he worked to regain strength in his surgically repaired left knee, and it appears he's finally making some real progress. Joining the Red Sox before the end of the season has not been ruled out, but Mondesi still has plenty of hurdles to clear.

The Red Sox made the decision three weeks ago to shut Mondesi down from baseball activities as he worked on regaining strength in his surgically repaired left knee. Evidently, the club isn't satisfied that he's made enough progress in that area, so the shutdown remains. Mondesi's timetable is open-ended.

• Red Sox's Adalberto Mondesi: Still regaining leg strength

  Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Wednesday that Mondesi (knee) hasn't suffered a setback but rather is still working to regain strength in his surgically repaired left knee, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Bloom was addressing reporters one day after it was reported that Mondesi has been shut down from all baseball activities. He noted that the team has "been working hard to get strength back in that leg" so that Mondesi can progress to game action, but "there's been this recurrent soreness" that hasn't allowed it to happen, so the club is hitting the pause button. Mondesi almost certainly isn't going to come back before the All-Star break at this point, if he makes it back at all this season.
