• Nick Tropeano: Parts ways with Texas

  Tropeano exercised the opt-out in his minor-league contract with the Rangers on Wednesday and has become a free agent, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. The right-hander joined Texas on a minor-league deal in January, but he was unable to get a look in the big leagues during the first two months of the season. Tropeano posted a 3.05 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 21:17 K:BB across 20.2 innings with Triple-A Round Rock prior to opting out.

  The Rangers reassigned Tropeano to minor-league camp Monday. Tropeano joined Texas on a minor-league deal in January after making five appearances at the MLB level in 2021, as he posted a 2.25 ERA in eight innings between the Giants and Mets. Though the 31-year-old possesses previous starting experience at the MLB level, the Rangers may envision him filling a relief role at Triple-A Round Rock to begin the upcoming season.

Tropeano was outrighted to Triple-A by the Mets earlier this week after clearing waivers, but he refused that assignment and became a free agent. Tropeano lost his spot on the Mets' 40-man roster Friday, when he was designated for assignment to make room for the team's new acquisitions following the trade deadline. Between the Giants and Mets, Tropeano has made five appearances at the big-league level in 2021, working five innings while giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks.
