  • The Nationals signed Cordero to a minor-league contract Wednesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. He did not receive an invitation to major-league spring training. Cordero spent the 2024 season with the Seibu Lions in Japan, hitting nine homers with a .714 OPS in 121 contests. The 30-year-old has put up big numbers in the minors but has never been able to have sustained success in the majors, posting a career .678 OPS over parts of seven seasons.

  • Franchy Cordero: Headed to Japan
    By RotoWire

Cordero signed a contract Thursday with the Seibu Lions in Japan. The news was reported by Cordero's agency (Republik Sports) on Instagram. The 29-year-old outfielder never quite got it going at the MLB level, but he's always torn it up in the minors and his offensive profile could wind up translating well to Nippon Professional Baseball. Cordero leaves behind a career .678 major-league OPS.

  • Franchy Cordero: Becomes free agent
    By RotoWire

Cordero elected to become a free agent Monday. He'll head to free agency rather than accept the Yankees' outright assignment. Cordero has often teased at the major-league level with his raw skills but ultimately has just a .678 OPS over parts of seven seasons.

  • The Yankees sent Cordero outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Cordero posted a .689 OPS through 71 plate appearances with the Yankees in 2023, though most of his time was spent in Triple-A, where he slashed .288/.403/.476 with 13 homers and 61 RBI. He'll have the option to elect free agency and would likely be able to attract a minor-league deal elsewhere.

  • Cordero went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two total runs scored in a loss to the Angels on Monday. The Yankees watched Los Angeles jump out to a big lead early, but Cordero at least gave his team some life with his solo shot in the eighth inning that narrowed the deficit to three runs. The outfielder finished with three hits overall, more than he had tallied over his previous 33 at-bats combined. Cordero homered four times in his first seven games as a Yankee, but Wednesday's long ball was his first since that span. He's spent most of his time in the minors since finishing April in a 1-for-28 swoon.
