Diaz went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Saturday in a 6-2 victory versus the White Sox. Diaz gave San Diego some extra cushion in the eighth inning with a two-run shot to left-center field. It was his sixth homer of the season and his first since joining the Padres in late August. In fact, prior to Saturday, Diaz -- who belted a career-high 18 long balls with the Rockies in 2021 -- hadn't gone deep since June 5, a stretch of 41 games.

The Padres selected Diaz's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. The 33-year-old joined the Padres on a minor-league contract Aug. 26 and will join the big club Sunday as MLB rosters expand to 28 players. Diaz may not receive consistent playing time, and he should serve as the backup to Luis Campusano on Sunday as Kyle Higashioka manages flu-like symptoms.

The Padres are expected to call up Diaz from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. After being released by the Rockies on Aug. 16, Diaz signed a minor-league contract with the Padres 10 days later. He's gone 3-for-12 with three runs scored, one home run and six RBI across his three outings with El Paso, and he will join the Padres active roster when it expands to 28 players Sunday. Diaz will provide a third option at catcher behind Kyle Higashioka (illness) and Luis Campusano.

Diaz agreed to a minor-league contract with the Padres on Monday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Diaz was let go by the Rockies on Aug. 16 after hitting .196 with eight RBI and five runs scored in 28 games since July 1. He'll get a chance to start fresh in San Diego, where he figures to serve as depth behind the dish at Triple-A El Paso.

The Rockies released Diaz on Friday. Diaz was placed on outright waivers earlier in the week, and the Rockies will now cut him loose after he went unclaimed. He's hitting just .196/.250/.268 since the All-Star break, but he's sure to draw interest from teams now that he can be had at the prorated minimum salary. Drew Romo was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Diaz's spot on the Rockies' roster.
