  Jones cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the Yankees on Friday. The 26-year-old was designated for assignment by New York on Monday but will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Jones spent the first four months of the season on the Yankees' active roster, but he totaled just 47 plate appearances in 33 games and had a .685 OPS and 34 percent strikeout rate.

  The Yankees designated Jones for assignment Monday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Jones is the roster casualty upon Giancarlo Stanton's (hamstring) return from the 10-day injured list. The 26-year-old had posted a .685 OPS across 47 plate appearances with the Yankees this season.

Jones was plugged into the No. 9 spot in the order while serving as the team's designated hitter in his third start over New York's past four games. The 26-year-old responded with his first multi-hit game of the campaign -- in fact, his three knocks Friday equaled the amount of hits he had collected over his previous 18 plate appearances coming into the contest. Jones has been used mostly as a pinch runner and defensive replacement this season, though he could continue to see more opportunities in the short term while Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) remains on the injured list.

Jones has remained on the big-league roster throughout the campaign, but he's made just one start, functioning almost exclusively as a pinch runner or defensive replacement. The 26-year-old's speed and defensive versatility make him useful in those roles, though his ability to remain with the big club may be more strongly tied to the fact that he's out of minor-league options. It's difficult to envision Jones becoming a viable fantasy asset given his very limited work and his career .178/.229/.451 slash line as a major-leaguer.
