The Reds reassigned Mathias on Wednesday. Mathias had been vying for a utility gig on the Reds' Opening Day roster but didn't make a hard charge for a spot, as he went 0-for-5 in Cactus League play before being sent to minor-league camp in the latest round of cuts. If Mathias sticks around in the organization through the start of the minor-league season, he'll report to Triple-A Louisville.

Mathias (shoulder) will start at third base and bat sixth in Monday's split-squad Cactus League game against the Brewers. The non-roster invitee will be making his second start in as many days after he went 0-for-3 while manning the keystone for five innings in Sunday's 9-4 win over the Angels. Mathias finished the 2023 campaign on the Giants' 60-day injured list due to a right shoulder strain, but he looks to be back to full health as the start of the 2024 season nears.

Mathias (shoulder) signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Nov. 29. Mathias, 29, sports a career .246/.317/.391 batting line over parts of three major-league seasons for four different teams. His 2023 campaign ended in mid-August due to a shoulder injury and it's not clear what his current health status is.

Mathias (shoulder) elected to become a free agent Friday. Mathias rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Sacramento after being pushed off the 40-man roster by San Francisco on Wednesday. The utility player went 14-for-62 (.226) with a .591 OPS in 27 major-league games this year between the Pirates and Giants before suffering a season-ending shoulder strain in mid-August.

The Giants sent Mathias (shoulder) outright to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. Mathias slashed just .226/.333/.258 across 72 plate appearances in the majors this season, and a strained shoulder put an early end to his season in mid-August. Mathias will have the option to elect free agency and should be able to draw a minor-league deal in the offseason.
