The White Sox released Kuhl on Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Kuhl is now a free agent after passing through waivers unclaimed. The veteran right-hander held a 5.06 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 54:25 K:BB across 53.1 innings for the White Sox this season.

The White Sox designated Kuhl for assignment Saturday. Across 31 appearances with the White Sox, Kuhl turned in a 5.06 ERA and 1.52 WHIP alongside a 54:25 K:BB across 53.1 innings. Despite his poor numbers, he had been working in somewhat of a high-leverage role, though he only managed to log one save while playing with one of the worst teams in modern baseball history. His removal from the active roster will make room in the bullpen for Michael Soroka (shoulder), who returned from the injured list Saturday.

Kuhl allowed a solo homer and struck out two batters in one inning en route to earning a save over the Astros on Friday. Kuhl coughed up a two-out homer to Jon Singleton but came back to strike out Jose Altuve and close out the 5-4 win. It was Kuhl's first save of the year and it came just two days after he was rocked for five runs by the Yankees. The White Sox don't have an active pitcher on the roster with more than two saves this season, so the ninth-inning situation still appears to be fluid. Kuhl owns a 5.03 ERA with a 35:19 K:BB through 39.1 innings this season.

Kuhl (0-1) took the loss Sunday against Pittsburgh, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts across four innings. Kuhl was thrust into Sunday's contest in the third inning after Michael Soroka exited after throwing three pitches due to shoulder soreness. Kuhl surrendered a three-run home run to Joey Bart in the fourth inning and left the contest following the sixth inning as the White Sox trailed 4-3, resulting in the loss. Since being called up June 14, Kuhl has appeared in seven games and tossed 21.1 innings, compiling a 5.06 ERA and a 20:14 K:BB.

Kuhl tossed 4.1 innings out of the bullpen in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Guardians, striking out one batter while giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks. In his previous appearance June 27, Kuhl made his first start of the season with the White Sox, working three scoreless innings in a no-decision against Atlanta. Kuhl was merely getting a spot start amid a busy portion of the White Sox's schedule, as he returned to a mop-up role out of the bullpen a week later. With the Chicago rotation at full strength with the exception of Mike Clevinger (elbow) -- who appears close to a return from the injured list -- Kuhl isn't expected to get any chances to start again in the near future.
