  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Earns first save
    By RotoWire

Kuhl allowed a solo homer and struck out two batters in one inning en route to earning a save over the Astros on Friday. Kuhl coughed up a two-out homer to Jon Singleton but came back to strike out Jose Altuve and close out the 5-4 win. It was Kuhl's first save of the year and it came just two days after he was rocked for five runs by the Yankees. The White Sox don't have an active pitcher on the roster with more than two saves this season, so the ninth-inning situation still appears to be fluid. Kuhl owns a 5.03 ERA with a 35:19 K:BB through 39.1 innings this season.

  • Kuhl (0-1) took the loss Sunday against Pittsburgh, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts across four innings. Kuhl was thrust into Sunday's contest in the third inning after Michael Soroka exited after throwing three pitches due to shoulder soreness. Kuhl surrendered a three-run home run to Joey Bart in the fourth inning and left the contest following the sixth inning as the White Sox trailed 4-3, resulting in the loss. Since being called up June 14, Kuhl has appeared in seven games and tossed 21.1 innings, compiling a 5.06 ERA and a 20:14 K:BB.

  • Kuhl tossed 4.1 innings out of the bullpen in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Guardians, striking out one batter while giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks. In his previous appearance June 27, Kuhl made his first start of the season with the White Sox, working three scoreless innings in a no-decision against Atlanta. Kuhl was merely getting a spot start amid a busy portion of the White Sox's schedule, as he returned to a mop-up role out of the bullpen a week later. With the Chicago rotation at full strength with the exception of Mike Clevinger (elbow) -- who appears close to a return from the injured list -- Kuhl isn't expected to get any chances to start again in the near future.

  • Kuhl did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks over three-plus innings against Atlanta. He struck out three. Kuhl pitched well, facing one batter over the minimum through his three innings. He then came out for the fourth but was pulled after allowing a leadoff double to Ozzie Albies. Kuhl, who had thrown 99 pitches in long relief Sunday, was making his first start since April of 2023. Thursday's outing doesn't appear to be anything more than a spot start for the 31-year-old righty, who will likely return to the bullpen.

  • Kuhl will start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Guaranteed Rate Field. Kuhl had started in 11 of his 13 appearances at Triple-A Charlotte prior to being called up June 14, but his first three outings with the big club have come out of the bullpen. However, Kuhl covered 4.1 innings and 99 pitches in long relief while mopping up in Sunday's 11-2 loss to the Tigers, so even though he'll be pitching on three days' rest, he should be able to provide the White Sox with a decent amount of length in a starting role. Unless he impresses against Atlanta to earn himself a longer stay in the rotation, Kuhl will likely be moved back to the bullpen or sent to the minors after Thursday's start.
