  • Potts was outrighted to the minors by the Red Sox on Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Potts was designated for assignment by Boston on Tuesday, and he'll remain in the organization after going unclaimed on waivers. The righty made 15 starts at Double-A Portland last year and posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 63.2 innings. He'll likely begin the 2022 campaign in Portland.

  • Red Sox's Hudson Potts: Loses 40-man spot
    By RotoWire

The Red Sox designated Potts for assignment Tuesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. One of two prospects the Red Sox acquired in the August 2020 deal that sent Mitch Moreland to San Diego, Potts didn't develop as hoped upon joining Boston's organization. The 23-year-old third baseman spent the entire 2021 campaign at Double-A Portland, posting a .646 OPS while striking out in 32.6 percent of his plate appearances. Assuming he clears waivers and stays in the organization, Potts will likely report back to Portland to begin the 2022 season.

  • Potts (oblique) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Thursday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Potts missed spring training and the start of the minor-league season due to an oblique strain, but he should be available to make his 2021 debut with Double-A Portland as early as Thursday. The 22-year-old appeared in 112 minor-league games in 2019 and slashed .242/.303/.431 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI.

  • Potts has yet to play in a spring training game due to an oblique strain, Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com reports. The 22-year-old has been held out for the first week of spring games due to the injury in his first camp with the Red Sox. Potts was acquired from the Padres at last year's trade deadline in the Mitch Moreland trade. He figures to open 2021 at Double-A or Triple-A once healthy.

  • Potts' contract was purchased by the Red Sox on Friday. The headliner in the trade that sent Mitch Moreland to San Diego, Potts could have really used a traditional minor-league season to work on his approach against upper-level pitchers after struggling at Double-A in 2019 (93 wRC+, 28.6 percent strikeout rate). Even so, he just turned 22, so he wouldn't even be old for the level if he were sent back to Double-A at the start of the 2021 season. He still possesses plus right-handed pop and has a chance to handle third base.
