The Red Sox released Adams on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Adams was activated by Triple-A Worcester on April 22, but he was unable to find much success. In 24 appearances, he had a 9.13 ERA with a 34:21 K:BB across 23.2 innings. After playing in at least 32 games in 2023 and 2024, he has yet to crack the big leagues in 2025.

The Red Sox reassigned Adams to minor-league camp Monday. Adams was one of three candidates for the Opening Day bullpen who was sent back to minor-league camp, with right-handers Isaiah Campbell and Noah Davis also getting demoted. The 33-year-old right-hander signed a minor-league contract with Boston in December after he turned in a 3.92 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 53:23 K:BB over 41.1 innings in the majors with the Athletics in 2024.

He appeared in 56 games for the Athletics prior to the injury and registered a 3.92 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 53:23 K:BB over 41.1 innings. The 33-year-old right-hander has a chance to earn a regular spot in the Red Sox's rotation once he is fully healthy.

Adams saw a planned rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas scrapped due to the setback, and he was sent back to Oakland for an evaluation. However, as of Monday, that testing had yet to occur, casting further doubt on the veteran reliever's chances of returning before the end of the regular season.
