  • Sweeney is not in the lineup for Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Guardians on Tuesday. Sweeney started at shortstop each of the last three times the Tigers faced a righty to close out the regular season, but he will begin his team's first playoff game on the bench as the Guardians send right-hander Gavin Williams to the bump. Javier Baez is handling shortstop and batting ninth.

  • Sweeney is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Sweeney will join fellow left-handed hitters Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith on the bench for the series opener while the Mets send southpaw Sean Manaea to the bump. Though Sweeney started in both of the previous two contests and has been seeing semi-regular run at shortstop since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 10, he's slashing just .205/.225/.359 over a stretch of 16 games. Sweeney could be at risk of a demotion or a move to a reserve role once outfielder Parker Meadows (quadriceps) is activated from the 10-day injured list, which could result in Zach McKinstry and Javier Baez seeing more playing time at shortstop.

  • Sweeney is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 10, Sweeney has been a fairly regular presence in the lineup, starting in eight of the previous 10 games while going 6-for-25 (.240 average) with one home run, six runs and four RBI. Sweeney could lose out on playing time once Parker Meadows' (quadriceps) return from the injured list likely pushes Javier Baez back to shortstop on a more frequent basis, but for now, the 25-year-old could continue to get steady playing time versus righties. The left-handed-hitting Sweeney will take a seat Wednesday against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez, however.

  • Sweeney went 2-for-4 with a triple, a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Monday's 10-0 win over the Astros. Sweeney chipped in his second triple of the season, but his key swing came in the seventh inning, when he launched his sixth home run of the year with two runners on. It was the young shortstop's first long ball since July 6 and gives him something to build on, as he's currently seeing regular playing time with Javier Baez focusing on center field as Detroit deals with injuries to Matt Vierling (oblique) and Parker Meadows (quad).

  • Sweeney went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored in Saturday's 8-5 win over the Twins. Sweeney recorded his first multi-hit performance since May 12 and set a new season high in runs scored. It's been a bit of a struggle for the second-year shortstop, as he's batting just .206 overall with a .573 OPS. Sweeney spent some time with Triple-A Toledo until a recent call-up to the majors, but he's been getting regular work at shortstop while Javier Baez has been needed in center field.
