The Reds optioned Petty to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. After he was recalled from Triple-A on Saturday, Petty had initially been expected to get a start. Instead Brent Suter opened the game, and Petty didn't get called upon until the bottom of the 11th after seven other pitchers had been used. He ended up taking his third loss of the season, recording two outs before surrendering a game-winning hit to Yohel Pozo. The Reds sent Petty back to the minors to remain stretched out as a starter and recalled Yosver Zulueta to replace him in the bullpen.

Petty was added to the Reds' taxi squad Friday and will be recalled from Triple-A Louisville to start Saturday against the Cardinals, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The right-hander will enter the rotation in place of Wade Miley (forearm), who was placed on the injured list Friday. Petty struggled in his first two big-league appearances earlier this season with 13 runs allowed over 5.1 innings, but he pitched to a 2.70 ERA in four starts with Louisville since being demoted.

Petty didn't pitch in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Guardians after being expected to operate as the primary pitcher. The right-hander was initially listed as Cincinnati's probable starter for Saturday, but the Reds made a late pivot and had Brent Suter open the game. Suter tossed three scoreless frames to lead off the game, but rather than turning to Petty after that, manager Terry Francona opted to have five other relievers finish out the win. The Reds will continue to have an opening in the rotation until Hunter Greene (groin) returns from the injured list, but Petty may not receive another start after getting lit up for 13 earned runs with a 7:8 K:BB in his first 5.1 big-league innings.

Petty will pitch in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Brent Suter against the Guardians on Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports. Petty's first two major-league starts haven't quite gone according to plan, as he's allowed 13 earned runs in just 5.1 innings. The Reds will now see how the 22-year-old fares after following an opener, and he could continue to do so in his future turns through the rotation if his performance improves.

The Reds recalled Petty from Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports. The 22-year-old will take the rotation spot of Hunter Greene, who was placed on the 15-day IL with a strained groin. Petty made his MLB debut back on April 30 against the Cardinals but lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing nine earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Petty will likely get a longer look this time around with Greene expected to miss at least a couple weeks.
