• Padres' Randy Vasquez: Logs quality start in no-decision

  Vasquez did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 1-0 win over Atlanta. He allowed four walks and four hits while striking out three across six scoreless innings. Although he wasn't as effective as counterpart Spencer Schwellenbach, Vasquez was able to induce double plays in the first and fourth inning and got out of another sticky situation in the sixth to keep Atlanta off the board. Vasquez was able to beat out Stephen Kolek for the final spot in the Padres' rotation in spring training, and the former's performance Saturday has validated that decision for the time being. Vasquez's next start is tentatively slated for next weekend against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

  Vasquez will begin the 2025 season in the Padres' starting rotation, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Vasquez has been competing for a spot near the back end of San Diego's starting rotation throughout spring training, and the team named Vasquez and Kyle Hart the fourth and fifth starters Monday, resulting in the demotion of Stephen Kolek to Triple-A El Paso. Vasquez performed well during camp, posting a 3.38 ERA with seven strikeouts and one walk over three appearances.

  Vasquez pitched four innings against the Cubs in a Cactus League contest Friday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out four batters. Vasquez worked in a piggyback role in the exhibition matchup, entering the game in the sixth frame following Michael King's five scoreless innings. Vasquez finished off the contest by allowing Chicago to score just one run, which came on a solo homer by Moises Ballesteros. The appearance was presumably Vasquez's final one of the spring, in which case he'll finish the Cactus League slate with a 3.38 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 7:1 K:BB across eight innings. It remains to be seen what Vasquez's role will be to begin the campaign, but he's in the running for one of two open rotation spots along with Stephen Kolek and Kyle Hart.

  Vasquez may be one of two finalists for San Diego's fifth-starter role, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. For most of spring training, Vasquez, Matt Waldron, Kyle Hart and Stephen Kolek have been battling for the job as the Padres' fifth starter. However, Waldron is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day due to a recent oblique injury, and Hart may not be built up in time for the start of the regular season after having his progression temporarily paused due to the flu. That may leave Vasquez and Kolek as the final two candidates for the team's final rotation spot. Vasquez has a clear edge in terms of starting experience after starting in all 20 of his outings with the Padres last season, while Kolek came out of the bullpen for all 42 of his appearances. Vasquez also impressed with five scoreless frames in a Triple-A start Friday, but Kolek has opened eyes this spring by allowing just one run over nine frames and averaging a mere 12 pitches per inning.

  Vasquez allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over six shutout innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Vasquez didn't come away with a win since it took until the ninth inning for the Padres' offense to wake up. It was still an impressive outing for the right-hander, who was in the majors for the first time since Sept. 1. He concludes the regular season with a 4.87 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 62:29 K:BB over 98 innings across 20 starts this season. Despite the strong outing, Vasquez is unlikely to make the Padres' wild-card roster, and he could be optioned out Sunday for a fresh bullpen arm.
