After turning in back-to-back quality starts in his previous two outings, Vasquez struggled Thursday, giving up a solo homer to Pete Alonso in the first inning before allowing another three runs before departing in the third. Through 125.2 innings this year, Vasquez sports a 3.94 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and 74:50 K:BB.   Vasquez is slated to start Thursday's game against the Rockies at Petco Park. The Padres activated Michael King from the injured list earlier this week, but with Nestor Cortes (biceps) still stuck on the shelf, Vasquez will get at least one more turn through the rotation. After being recalled from Triple-A El Paso last weekend, Vasquez delivered a quality start in the Padres' win over the Rockies at Coors Field, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out three over six innings. He'll take a 3.91 ERA and 1.38 WHIP into Thursday's rematch with the Rockies in San Diego.

• Padres' Randy Vasquez: Slated for start Saturday

  Vasquez will be recalled from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday's game against the Rockies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Vasquez will fill the gap in the Padres rotation Saturday, marking his first big-league action since Aug. 15. The 26-year-old has a 3.96 ERA and a 59:49 K:BB in 111.1 innings spanning 23 appearances with the Padres this season. Per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune, Nestor Cortes (biceps) is headed to the 15-day injured list, which means Vasquez could stick in the rotation even after Michael King (knee) is activated, likely at some point during the upcoming week.

  The Padres optioned Vasquez to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. Vasquez was recalled from El Paso on Thursday and worked 3.2 innings in bulk relief against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts while taking the loss. The Padres have elected to return him to the minors one day later in order to make room on the 26-man roster for reliever Ron Marinaccio. Though Vasquez has pitched to an uninspiring 3.96 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 111.1 big-league frames on the campaign, there's a good chance he'll be back up with San Diego at some point before the end of the season, especially if additional injuries hit the rotation. Michael King is already on the IL due to left knee inflammation, and it's unclear who will slide into his starting role now that Vasquez is in El Paso.
