The Padres optioned Gillaspie to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. The right-hander was called up by San Diego on Thursday, and he'll return to the minors after giving up six earned runs in two relief appearances. Gillaspie is heading back to El Paso, where he has a 3.60 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB across 35 innings this year.

Gillaspie will lose his spot in the major-league bullpen as the Friars make room for Martin Perez, Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing -- all of whom were acquired Tuesday ahead of the trade deadline. After his promotion to San Diego on July 10, Gillaspie allowed three earned runs in 5.2 innings while striking out one batter and walking none.

The Padres recalled Gillaspie from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. With Yu Darvish (groin) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) both headed for the injured list, Gillaspie and Randy Vasquez will come up from the minors to fill the openings in San Diego's pitching staff. Gillaspie has appeared in two games for the Padres this year, throwing 2.2 shutout innings, but he has posted a 5.17 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 15.2 frames in Triple-A. He will likely be limited to low-leverage situations while with the big-league club.
