The Cubs designated Wingenter for assignment Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for trade acquisition Matt Thaiss. Wingenter, 30, boasts a 30.5 percent strikeout rate but also a 12 percent walk rate over parts of four seasons at the big-league level.

The Cubs optioned Wingenter to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. Wingenter has made five relief appearances for the Cubs this season, allowing two runs with a 3:2 K:BB over six frames. He had pitched both of the last two days, so the Cubs are replacing him with a fresh arm in Gavin Hollowell, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

The Cubs recalled Wingenter from Triple-A Iowa on Friday. The right-hander was demoted to Triple-A on Tuesday but will now take the roster spot of Jordan Wicks, who was placed on the injured list due to an oblique strain. Wingenter has appeared in just five big-league games between the Red Sox and Cubs this season and has given up nine earned runs with a 4:3 K:BB over 6.1 innings.
