The Pirates claimed Gray off waivers from the Athletics on Thursday. Gray appeared in 15 MLB games last season between the Marlins and A's, during which he went 3-for-28 with 16 strikeouts. He fared much better in Triple-A, where he slashed .248/.317/.462 across 470 plate appearances. Gray will start at first base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Tigers. The lefty-hitting Gray has now picked up starts in five consecutive matchups with right-handed starters or primary pitchers and looks to have displaced Daz Cameron for a regular spot in the Oakland lineup. Since his Sept. 1 call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas, Gray has gone 3-for-17 with a double and three walks.

Gray went 1-for-4 with a double in a loss to the Mariners on Wednesday. Gray recorded his first hit in an Athletics uniform when he laced one of three doubles in the lopsided loss for Oakland. The 28-year-old, who had just five career big-league plate appearances prior to this season, is capable of playing across the infield and has now drawn three straight starts.
