Abreu went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Thursday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Yankees. Abreu, who rarely starts against left-handers, was a late addition to the lineup when Rob Refsnyder (wrist) was scratched. After Danny Jansen tied the game to lead off the fifth inning, Abreu singled and stole second base, putting himself in scoring position, but got stranded at third after a wild pitch. Abreu is slashing .185/.241/.278 against left-handers this season.

Abreu will start in right field and bat eighth Thursday against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Abreu owns a .511 OPS against left-handed pitchers this season through 55 plate appearances.

Abreu is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The 25-year-old will head to the bench against lefty Tarik Skubal, which is standard procedure whenever the Red Sox face a southpaw. Abreu has made just five starts against lefties all year and is 9-for-49 (.184 average) against left-handed pitching this season. Rob Refsnyder, Jarren Duran and Tyler O'Neill will start in the outfield from left to right while Rafael Devers serves as the designated hitter.
