  • Johnny Cueto: Elects free agency
    By RotoWire

Cueto elected free agency Monday. Cueto was removed from the Angels' 40-man roster Friday after posting a 7.15 ERA in two starts, and he's now free to sign on with another club. The 38-year-old holds a 6.22 ERA over 63.2 frames since the beginning of the 2023 campaign.

  • The Angels designated Cueto for assignment Friday. Cueto stumbled to a 7.15 ERA in a pair of starts for the Halos, striking out just six batters across 11.1 innings while taking two losses. He'll yield his spot on the 26-man and 40-man rosters as Samuel Aldegheri and Caden Dana join the big-league club.

  • Cueto (0-2) took the loss against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings. Cueto was locked in a 2-2 game through four innings but then surrendered three home runs and was pulled without recording an out in the sixth. In two starts with the Angels, the veteran has allowed nine earned runs across 11.1 innings while posting a 6:3 K:BB. He tentatively lines up to face the Mariners at home Sunday.

  • Cueto is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park. The Angels called Cueto up from Triple-A Salt Lake this past Wednesday to make his club debut as well as his first appearance in the majors of 2024. The 38-year-old righty was far from overpowering (one strikeout, three swinging strikes on 84 pitches) and took a loss to the Rangers, but he worked into the seventh inning and allowed three earned runs to come away with a quality start. So long as he can continue to eat innings effectively enough, Cueto should maintain a hold on a rotation spot, but his lack of strikeout upside limits his fantasy value.

  • Cueto (0-1) took the loss against the Royals on Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks over 6.1 innings while striking out one. Cueto retired the first five batters he faced on the night before allowing four consecutive men to reach in the second, leading to two runs coming home for Kansas City. The veteran right-hander would then allow a solo homer off the bat of MJ Melendez in the sixth after hurling three consecutive scoreless innings, and he was later relieved by Roansy Contreras with one out in the seventh. Though he ended up taking the loss, Cueto held his own in his first outing of the season, logging a quality start while getting through 6.1 innings on 84 pitches. Of course, only one strikeout leaves much to be desired for fantasy owners.
