  • Johnson is slashing .270/.353/.386 with nine home runs and 20 steals in 109 games for Double-A Altoona. His slash line doesn't excite, but he's been 15 percent better than the average Eastern League hitter. For what it's worth, Johnson's been racking up hits of late, batting .370 with a .446 OBP over his last 18 games, although none of his 27 hits during this stretch have left the yard. Johnson will likely be given more opportunities than his overall skill set might otherwise warrant due to the fact he was the No. 4 overall pick in 2022, but his dynasty stock is trending down. He hasn't slugged over .400 since he was at High-A in 2023 and he doesn't project to add defensive value at second base.

  • Johnson (knee) went 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored during Sunday's game against Double-A Somerset. Johnson picked up a minor knee injury during Friday's matchup against the Patriots, but it only sidelined the 20-year-old for one game. His quick return to the field is positive news for the organization, which hopes to see the young prospect take another step forward in 2025 after struggling in his brief taste of action at Double-A a season ago.

  • Johnson (foot) has played in two of Double-A Altoona's first three games of the season, going 2-for-8 with a double, a walk, a stolen base and a run. Johnson's availability for the start of the minor-league season appeared to be in some question after he was unable to play in the Pirates' March 14 Spring Breakout game due to a bone bruise in his left foot, but he was evidently able to move past the issue a few weeks later. One of the top prospects in Pittsburgh's system, the 20-year-old Johnson is coming off a 2024 season in which he posted a .752 OPS with 15 home runs and 22 stolen bases over 124 games between Altoona and High-A Greensboro.

  • Johnson was removed from the Pirates' Spring Breakout game roster due to a bone bruise in his left foot, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. It's not clear how long the injury might keep Johnson sidelined. The 20-year-old finished last season at Double-A Altoona and is likely headed back there for the start of the 2025 campaign.

  • Johnson (foot) was spotted taking grounders at second base during Thursday's spring training workout, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. After suffering a right foot injury in an Oct. 9 game in the Arizona Fall League, Johnson was limited to just 11 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions and slashed .250/.444/.475 with a home run and three stolen bases. The injury doesn't appear to be anything that is limiting him early on during the spring, and though he's attending big-league camp with the Pirates, Johnson will likely be headed to Double-A Altoona to begin the 2025 season. The 20-year-old infielder remains one of Pittsburgh's top prospects and could make a push for his big-league debut later in the season if he continues to maintain high walk rates while putting his power and speed on display in the upper levels of the minors.
