  • Hodge was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. This is Hodge's second demotion to Triple-A this season. He gave up three earned runs, including two home runs, in one inning Friday in Cincinnati, and the Cubs will bring up a fresh arm (Jordan Wicks) to replace Hodge in the bullpen.

  • Hodge (2-2) allowed three runs on three hits across an inning of relief to take the loss Friday against the Reds. He walked one and struck out two. Hodge worked the sixth inning after starter Shota Imanaga allowed three earned runs across five innings, and the former matched that in his lone frame. The righty reliever served up home runs to Spencer Steer and Elly De La Cruz as he saw his ERA climb to 6.27. With the Cubs headed toward the postseason, Hodge has done very little this year to earn a spot in the playoff bullpen.

  • Cubs' Porter Hodge: Can't finish out game
    By RotoWire

Hodge allowed a hit and two walks while retiring two batters in the ninth inning of Monday's win over the Pirates before getting lifted for Brad Keller, who recorded the final out of the game. Hodge got the ninth inning staked to a 4-0 lead, so it wasn't a save opportunity, but he quickly made trouble for himself by loading the bases. The Cubs then turned to Keller for the final out, and he managed to earn his second save of the season by cleaning up Hodge's mess. Hodge continues to struggle with a 5.81 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 31 innings this year, and Monday's poor effort won't help the righty earn any more high-leverage work in Chicago's bullpen.

  • Hodge (shoulder) is slated to pitch for Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Hodge has been on the shelf since July 9 due to a right shoulder impingement, but he's been cleared to start a rehab assignment. It's unclear how many rehab appearances he'll require, but Hodge should rejoin the Cubs in the near future.

  • The Cubs activated Hodge (hip) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. Hodge initially went on the IL in late May with an oblique strain, but more recently it was a left hip impingement giving him trouble. However, Hodge has been cleared to return after making four rehab appearances with Triple-A Iowa. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) with a 3:4 K:BB over three innings in those rehab outings, so the Cubs could ease Hodge back into high-leverage situations.
