Malloy was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Saturday. The Tigers needed to make room on the 40-man roster for recent re-signee Kyle Finnegan, and Malloy has ended up being the cut. Malloy has struggled during his time in the majors so far, posting a .656 OPS with nine home runs, 38 RBI, 33 runs and one stolen base over 123 games spanning 357 plate appearances. He's also posted a 32.8 percent strikeout rate, though he has shown an ability to take a free pass with a 12.0 percent walk rate. That and his moderate power could make him a target on waivers for other MLB clubs.

The Tigers recalled Malloy from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. With Malloy back with the big-league club, Jace Jung has been optioned to Toledo. Malloy was sent down to Triple-A earlier this month and has slashed .214/.347/.296 with one home run, 17 RBI, 14 runs scored and a 20:31 BB:K across 121 plate appearances with the Tigers this season.

Malloy was recalled from Triple-A earlier this week but will head back to Toledo after Chris Paddack was reinstated from the bereavement list Saturday. Malloy has appeared in 49 games for the Tigers this season, slashing .214/.347/.296 with one home run, 17 RBI, 14 runs scored and a 20:31 BB:K across 121 plate appearances. Both Jahmai Jones and Andy Ibanez have surpassed Malloy on the depth chart as options against left-handed pitching.

The Tigers recalled Malloy from Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Malloy, 25, slashed .317/.444/.490 with eight home runs and five steals in 66 games at Triple-A this season, but he has yet to have sustained success at the big-league level, as he's managed a career .205/.307/.339 slash line in 348 plate appearances. The righty-hitting Malloy figures to play mostly against left-handed pitchers while getting starts at designated hitter and the outfield corners.
