The Reds re-signed Spiers (elbow) to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training Monday. Spiers was non-tendered by Cincinnati last week, but he'll remain in the organization on a minor-league pact. The right-hander is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season after having Tommy John surgery in late July, so it's likely a two-year minor-league contract.

The Reds non-tendered Spiers (elbow) on Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports. Spiers was DFA'd by the Reds on Tuesday and will now officially leave the organization after not being offered a contract ahead of Friday's deadline. The 28-year-old righty underwent Tommy John surgery in late July and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season.

Spiers (elbow) was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports. Cincinnati needed a 40-man spot for one of its young prospects, and Spiers was a likely choice to be bounced given he's expected to miss most, if not all, of 2026. The right-hander made three appearances (two starts) in the majors this past season before undergoing Tommy John surgery at the end of July. Spiers has put up a 5.69 ERA and 1.57 WHIP over 117 career innings in the majors.

Reds manager Terry Francona said Saturday that Spiers will require season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, Pat Brennan of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Spiers had been in the midst of a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville while working his way back from a shoulder impingement, but he was pulled off the assignment about a week ago after experiencing soreness in his right biceps. He underwent a couple of MRIs since then, and a second opinion confirmed that Tommy John surgery was necessary. No date has been set for Spiers' procedure, but the surgery will be performed by renowned arm specialist Dr. Keith Meister. In addition to missing the remainder of the season, Spiers will be at risk of missing the entire 2026 campaign as well.

Spiers (shoulder) struck out five and gave up one hit and four walks over 3.2 scoreless innings in his rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. Though Spiers kept Columbus off the board during his start, he spotted just 39 of his 72 pitches for strikes in the outing, which was the third of his rehab assignment. On the shelf since April 20 due to a right shoulder impingement, Spiers appears to be close to fully stretched out at this point, but the Reds don't seem to have an opening for him in the big-league rotation. Spiers could be activated from the 60-day injured list coming out of the All-Star break to serve as a long-relief option for the big club, or the Reds could option him to Triple-A if they want to keep him in a starting role.
