  • Zimmermann cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Triple-A Norfolk, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Zimmermann hasn't pitched in the majors this season, and he was designated for assignment Thursday to clear space on the 40-man roster for infielder Emmanuel Rivera. After clearing waivers, Zimmermann will stick around in the organization continue to serve as rotational depth at Norfolk, with whom he has produced a 4.64 ERA and 1.47 WHIP through 66 innings this season.

  • The Orioles designated Zimmermann for assignment Thursday. Zimmermann was pushed off the 40-man roster with the Orioles needing to clear a spot for infielder Emmanuel Rivera, who was claimed off waivers from the Marlins. The 29-year-old southpaw made 38 appearances (27 starts) with the Orioles over the previous four seasons, but even with injuries testing the big club's rotation depth in recent weeks, Zimmermann had yet to receive a call-up from Triple-A Norfolk in 2024. He's mostly served as a member of Norfolk's rotation when healthy this season, logging a 4.64 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 60:25 K:BB across 66 innings.

  • The Orioles optioned Zimmermann to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Zimmermann was among the candidates to fill in for Kyle Bradish (elbow) and John Means (elbow) in the rotation, but he quickly fell behind Tyler Wells and Cole Irvin in the pecking order and never made up ground. The left-hander will be part of Norfolk's rotation.

  • Zimmermann has allowed five runs (three earned) on 12 hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over 7.2 innings in Grapefruit League play. Zimmermann's history as a starter made it possible he'd be considered for a spot in the rotation, but all three of his spring appearances have come in relief. He's also giving up too many baserunners with a 1.96 WHIP in spring -- those kinds of numbers could lead to him being in the bullpen to begin the year if he makes the major-league roster.

  • Zimmermann could be in the mix for a rotation spot with John Means (elbow) and Kyle Bradish (elbow) likely to miss the start of the season, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Zimmermann covered 13.1 major-league innings last season, posting a 4.73 ERA and 14:0 K:BB. With Triple-A Norfolk, he featured as a starter, but ended up with middling results -- a 4-7 record, 4.42 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 110:39 K:BB through 99.2 innings across 21 starts. Zimmermann will need a strong spring to secure a spot in the rotation -- Cole Irvin and Tyler Wells will likely be favored to fill out that group if the Orioles begin the year with a five-man rotation. Zimmermann could ultimately find himself in a swingman role.
