Canterino missed all of 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He returned for spring training but suffered a rotator cuff strain in mid-March. He had recently started throwing and working his way back, but this latest development could represent a significant setback.

There's no timetable for his return, but at least he's started to make progress. Canterino will begin the season on the injured list at Triple-A St. Paul with a right subscapularis strain, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Canterino was sent to minor-league camp a week ago and now is hurt. It's not clear how long he might be sidelined. Injuries are unfortunately nothing new for Canterino, who missed all of the 2023 season following Tommy John surgery.

Canterino (elbow) was optioned to to Double-A Wichita on Saturday. Canterino is expected to miss most of the 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. The 25-year-old had a 1.83 ERA across 34.1 innings for Double-A Wichita prior to the injury.

Canterino (elbow) has struck out four while allowing one run on three hits and one walk in 2.2 innings between two appearances since beginning a rehab assignment Monday with the Twins' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate. Canterino has been shut down at Double-A Wichita since early June with a right elbow strain, but he should be ready to rejoin the affiliate within the next couple of weeks. Prior to being deactivated, the 24-year-old turned in a 1.83 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 50:22 K:BB over 34.1 innings for Wichita.
