Alvarez cleared waivers Thursday and was sent outright to Triple-A Las Vegas. The 30-year-old Alvarez posted a .967 OPS in Triple-A across 317 plate appearances in 2024 and reached the majors for the first time, going 9-for-37 with two RBI over 16 games. However, he no longer owns a spot on the Athletics' 40-man roster and will remain in Las Vegas as organizational depth.

Alvarez was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday. Alvarez had been with the big-league club since Aug. 27, though he had picked up eight at-bats in that span. He'll head back to the minors to make room for Tyler Soderstrom (wrist) to return from the injured list.

Alvarez has slashed .276/.323/.310 during his time with Oakland this season in his first go-round in the big leagues. The 30-year-old offers defensive versatility and should operate as a backup at multiple spots.

The 30-year-old right-handed hitter was in the lineup Thursday at first base against a lefty starter, but that was his lone start during this latest stint with the big club. Alvarez is slashing .306/.402/.580 with 14 home runs and an 18 percent strikeout rate in 62 games at Triple-A this season.

The Athletics recalled Alvarez from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. Oakland optioned Alvarez to Triple-A on Saturday, but he'll be eligible to rejoin the big club four days later since the Athletics placed Brent Rooker (personal) on the paternity list in a corresponding move. Rooker is expected to miss between one and three games while he's on the paternity list, and once he returns, Alvarez will likely head back to the minors.
