Twins' Aaron Thompson: Assigned to minor league camp

Aaron Thompson was reassigned to Minnesota's minor league camp. With Thompson sent to the minors, it increasingly looks like Fernando Abad will make the bullpen as a second lefty. Thompson looked to be the top lefty in the Minnesota bullpen last season after a strong first two months of the season (3.42 ERA), but he fell apart with nine earned runs in 8.1 innings after June 1 and then languished in the minors. He could be called up at some point this summer if Abad falters.

Twins looking to Aaron Thompson, Ryan Pressly for long relief

The Minnesota Twins are working without a dedicated long reliever. Tim Stauffer is on the 15-day disabled list, and the team decided to send Tommy Milone to Triple-A so he could remain a starter, instead of sending him to the bullpen.  Manager Paul Molitor said he'd mix and match pitchers in long-relief situations. Aaron Thompson got the first call, going 2 1/3 innings on Saturday. Ryan Pressly is probably next.  Pressly was promoted from Triple-A on Friday.  "Pressly is probably one of the longer guys I could use in a game right now, but it could change day to day," Molitor said, per MLB.com.  "It's all fine by me," Pressly said. "I just want to pitch and prove to them I've made some tweaks, and I'm not the same reliever that was all over the place in Spring Training. I just have to take the opportunity and run with it."

Santana suspended for PEDs; Pelfrey joins rotation, Thompson recalled

Twins starting pitcher Ervin Santana has been suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol, which is a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball announced Friday.  “We were disappointed to learn of the suspension of Ervin Santana for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the Twins said in a statement Friday. "We fully support Major League Baseball’s policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing substances from our game. Per the protocol outlined in the Joint Drug Program, the Minnesota Twins will not comment further on this matter.” Santana's suspension comes a day after Braves pitcher Arodys Vizcaino was suspended 80 games for also testing positive for Stanozolol.  The 32-year-old Santana is in his first year with the Twins after signing a four-year, $55 million contract in the offseason. He also has a $14 million team option for a fifth year. Mike Pelfrey, who lost out on the competition for the fifth spot in the rotation, will avoid a bullpen assignment and take Santana's spot in the rotation. Reliever Aaron Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take Santana's roster spot. "I am very disappointed that I tested positive for a performance enhancing drug," Santana said in a statement. "I am frustrated that I can't pinpoint how the substance in question entered my body. I would never knowingly take anything illegal to enhance my performance. What I can guarantee is I never knowingly took anything illegal to enhance my performance. That's just not me, never has ben and never will."
