Scott Diamond: Elects free agency
Scott Diamond became a free agent after refusing his minor league assignment, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.Diamond spent the bulk of 2016 with the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, but he only managed to put up a meager 4.50 ERA in 28 starts for the Bisons. The left-hander does have a considerable amount of major league experience, but he'll likely fill a Quad-A role wherever he lands given the fact that he hasn't seen much success in the big leagues since his 2012 campaign with the Twins.

Blue Jays' Scott Diamond: Fails to make major league impact in 2016
Scott Diamond finished up the 2016 International League season with a 9-15 record, 4.50 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 28 starts for Triple-A Buffalo.Diamond, who started 58 games for the Twins from 2011-2013, pitched in just one game this season for the Jays -- his first MLB appearance since 2013. There were whispers that the 30-year-old could contribute to the big league squad at some point during the year, but that wound up to be far from the truth. The fact that the team didn't even add Diamond to the 40-man roster says something about where the southpaw stands with the organization, especially considering the Jays have the room available and a ton of games against left-handed hitters down the stretch.

Blue Jays' Scott Diamond: Pitching well for Triple-A Buffalo
Scott Diamond is 6-10 with a 3.56 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 65 strikeout over 20 starts (124 innings) for Triple-A Buffalo this season.Diamond was signed to a minor league contract last winter with the thought that he could add left-handed depth out of the bullpen. He had his contract selected by the team and made one appearance in mid-June before getting sent back to the minors. Despite his record, the veteran has performed admirably for Buffalo this season. However, at this stage of the season it is obvious Diamond will not contribute at the major league level in 2016.

Blue Jays' Scott Diamond: Optioned Tuesday
Scott Diamond was designated for assignment Tuesday, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Diamond had just joined the major league roster Monday, but he struggled in his lone appearance with the big league club to the tune of two walks and three runs over just one inning, so he'll head back to the minors. A corresponding roster move isn't expected to be announced until Wednesday, but Diamond figures to be a candidate to get promoted again later in the season should Toronto find themselves in need of pitching depth.

Blue Jays' Scott Diamond: Struggles in first MLB appearance since 2013
Scott Diamond made his debut for the Jays on Monday against the Phillies. He pitched one inning, allowing three runs, two hits and two walks. The left-hander returned to the show after spending all of 2014 and 2015 in the minors. He's made 59 career appearances in the majors, and Monday was his first in relief. From 2011-2013, the 29-year-old went 19-27 with a 4.43 ERA in 58 starts for Minnesota. Diamond is not expected to pick up starts for the Jays, but should make plenty of appearances as the team's left-handed specialist out of the pen.

Blue Jays' Scott Diamond: Contract selected by Blue Jays
Scott Diamond had his contract selected by the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.Diamond has been solid in Triple-A Buffalo this season, posting a 3.16 ERA and 1.16 WHIP through 12 starts, although his 4.50 K/9 is rather low and could get him into some trouble in the big leagues. He'll take the bullpen spot of Pat Venditte, who was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Blue Jays' Scott Diamond: Earns win against Pawtucket
Scott Diamond pitched five innings in a minor league game Friday, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out five and collecting the win.Diamond spent all of 2015 on Triple-A Durham in the Rays organization, posting an 11-6 record with a 3.71 ERA in over 150 innings. The 29-year-old has not seen the mound in the big leagues since 2013 with the Twins when he recorded 131 innings with a 5.43 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. Diamond did have a great, albeit brief, spring training, logging four innings of scoreless baseball while only allowing one hit. Since he hasn't seen time in the majors since 2013, it is unlikely that Diamond will find a spot in the bullpen with the Toronto Blue Jays this season without months of stellar play on the mound for Triple-A Buffalo.
