Reid Detmers (4-7) allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings to take the loss Monday versus the White Sox.Andrew Benintendi and Andrew Vaughn went back-to-back in the first inning, and Detmers continued to struggle after that. The White Sox got to him for three runs in the second and light-hitting Lenyn Sosa added a solo shot in the third. Given the quality of the opponent, this was a large step back for Detmers, who had posted quality starts in his first two outings back in the majors. He's at a 6.05 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 94:34 K:BB through 80.1 innings over 15 starts. With Caden Dana sent down Monday, the Los Angeles Angels are likely to go with a five-man rotation over the final two weeks of the season. Detmers' next outing is projected to be in Houston.

Angels' Reid Detmers: Called up, will start Tuesday
The Los Angeles Angels recalled Reid Detmers from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. He's scheduled to start the Angels' series opener versus the Dodgers in Anaheim on Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.The left-hander will be back with the Angels for the first time since early June after he was banished to the minors following a string of poor starts. He had largely struggled to the right the ship over his first two months at Salt Lake, but Detmers settled into a groove over his final three starts with the Triple-A club (1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB in 21 innings) to earn another chance with the Angels. With the Angels recently adding rookies Jack Kochanowicz, Caden Dana and Samuel Aldegheri to a rotation that already included Tyler Anderson and Griffin Canning, the promotion of Detmers now gives the club six starters. The Angels could keep a six-man rotation in place over the final four weeks of the season to help limit the innings of the young starters while also affording them an additional day of rest between starts.

Reid Detmers allowed one run on three hits and two walks over eight innings while striking out 11 batters in his start for Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.Detmers has been with Salt Lake since early June following a string of poor starts in the majors. His 11-punchout performance Friday was his third double-digit strikeout effort over 12 starts in the minors, and he's racked up an impressive 83 punchouts over 65 innings during that span. On the flip side, Detmers has also posted a 6.37 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, so he hasn't made the strongest case for a return to the majors. The Los Angeles Angels placed starter Jose Soriano on the injured list Saturday due to arm fatigue and will need a replacement for his spot in the rotation, but Hector Gomez of Z101Digital.com reports that veteran hurler Johnny Cueto will be called up from Triple-A to fill the opening rather than Detmers.

Angels' Reid Detmers: Fans 11 in minor-league start
Reid Detmers tossed six innings for Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out 11 batters.Detmers was optioned to Triple-A on June 1 after a series of poor starts with the Los Angeles Angels. His first minor-league outing since 2022 didn't go well, as he gave up seven runs over five frames in a June 7 start versus Sugar Land. The southpaw has improved since, and over his past two outings with Salt Lake he's struck out 21 hitters across 12 frames, though he's also surrendered eight earned runs over that stretch. Overall, Detmers has logged a 5.70 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 41:9 K:BB across 30 frames through five starts in the minors. Angels pitching coach Barry Enright said last week that Detmers was "trending in the right direction" in terms of improvement when addressing how the club will fill the rotation spot of Patrick Sandoval, who has since been ruled out for the season after undergoing an internal brace procedure to repair the UCL in his pitching elbow. That said, it's unclear what the team's plans are for Detmers moving forward. The Angels rotation has had a lot of moving parts of late -- in addition to Sandoval's injury, Zach Plesac was demoted to Triple-A on Saturday, Jose Soriano (abdomen) is slated to return from the injured list Tuesday, and Davis Daniel was promoted from the minors to make his first start of the season last Thursday. In addition, Roansy Contreras was moved from the bullpen to make a spot start last Wednesday and is slated to get another turn in the rotation this coming Thursday versus Oakland.

He was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake after the start.Detmers started the season as one of the Los Angeles Angels' top starters and garnered wins in each of his first three starts, striking out 26 batters with two runs allowed across 17.1 innings. However, he hasn't gotten in the win column since. Outside of a decent 8.9 K/9 across his last 40.1 innings, nothing has been working for Detmers lately, as he's allowed 10 long balls and 20 walks over that stretch. The 24-year-old was a reliable arm for Los Angeles the past two seasons and it's possible that a Triple-A stint will help the southpaw regain some confidence and find his previous form. For now, Detmers will give up his spot in the rotation and on the 26-man roster. A corresponding move has yet to be announced.
