David Wright: Career officially ends
The Mets released David Wright on Monday.Wright had previously announced in September that 2018 would be his last season in the big leagues, so the Mets' decision to remove him from the roster was merely a procedural move. The 36-year-old will remain with the organization in advisory role to the front office and will still be paid the $27 million he's owed through the next two years.

Mets' David Wright: Makes first appearance in two seasons
David Wright (shoulder) played in a major league game for the first time in two and a half seasons in Friday's loss to the Braves. He pinch-hit to lead off the fifth and grounded out to third, going 0-for-1 in his only at-bat.It's been a long road back for the New York Mets captain as there was plenty of doubt over whether he'd ever step foot on the field again. After extensive time off and plenty of rehab, Wright has worked his way back so that he can play one final game before he retires. He will bat third and start at third base for the Mets on Saturday against the Braves in the last major league game of his illustrious career.

Mets' David Wright: Rejoining roster Sept. 25, ending playing career
Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said Thursday that David Wright (shoulder) will finish the 2018 season on the active roster, officially joining the team Sept. 25 prior to a three-game series versus the Braves, James Wagner of The New York Times reports. Wright will start at third base against the Marlins on Sept. 29 and end his playing career following the conclusion of the 2018 season, per Wagner.Following a long and rocky road back from multiple injuries and surgeries, Wright will receive a proper sendoff in front of the New York Mets' fans for the club's final homestand of the season. During the press conference, Wright repeatedly thanked his teammates, coaches and fans, stating, "It's truly been an honor to take the field with you and serve as your captain." When he's reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Sept. 25, that will mark his first time back on the active roster since June 3, 2016. It's unclear if Wright will receive any playing time during the series against the Braves or in the opener versus Miami on Sept. 28, but he will at least take the field in the starting lineup in what looks like the final game in his career Sept. 29. Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Wright admitted that "there's not going to be any improvement" regarding his physical condition and all but said he will retire at the end of the year, though the term "medically unfit to continue playing" was used multiple times instead of "retirement" during the press conference. Over the course of his 15-year career, Wright has hit 242 home runs, recorded 970 RBI, and played in 1,583 games for the Mets.

Mets' David Wright: Remains hopeful to play again
David Wright (shoulder) will address the media Thursday at 1:45 p.m. EDT regarding his plans for the rest of the season.According to Jon Heyman of FancredSports.com, it's not believed that Wright will be making a retirement announcement Thursday and is expected to instead declare his intention to continue his playing career. Shoulder and back issues have prevented Wright from suiting up in the majors since 2016, but the 35-year-old seemed to be gearing up for a return to the big club during the season's final month after appearing in 13 minor-league rehab contests in August. Wright reported back to the New York Mets at the beginning of September and has been participating in simulated games, but the team has yet to reveal if it intends to activate the third baseman from the 60-day disabled list. The press conference should offer more insight into the matter, but even if Wright is added to the active roster, he'll likely only handle a part-time role over the next few weeks.

Mets' David Wright: Simulated game on tap
David Wright (shoulder) will participate in another workout Friday followed by a simulated game Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. This likely rules out any shot Wright had of returning from the disabled list this weekend, though it marks another positive step in the right direction. Wright has been rehabbing with the big-league club for the past week but remains without a concrete timetable.

Mets' David Wright: Continues rehab with big club
David Wright (shoulder) will meet up with the New York Mets in San Francisco this weekend in order to continue his recovery with team trainers.According to assistant general manager John Ricco, Wright isn't all that close to being activated from the disabled list, but this is clearly another step in the right direction for the 35-year-old infielder. Ricco added earlier in the week that "it's unrealistic to think he'd be activated any time soon," and ruled out a return during the team's current road trip, which runs through Sept. 5, according to Tim Healey of Newsday. Either way, don't expect him to hold much value for the rest of the 2018 campaign.
