David Murphy: Intends to retire
David Murphy intends to retire from baseball, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Murphy technically became a free agent Monday after exercising the out in his contract with the Twins. He might have been an option for the big-league squad as soon as this week, but Murphy decided he'd rather spend more time with his family, suggesting that retirement is on the horizon. He probably won't file the actual papers, as he's only 34 years old and could conceivably still help a major league team in a platoon or pinch-hitting role.

David Murphy: Exercises out in contract, now a free agent
David Murphy exercised the out in his contract and became a free agent Monday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.Murphy was obviously not satisfied playing at the minor league level for the Twins and is now eligible to sign with another team. Murphy has a solid MLB track record (career .274 BA and .333 OBP), and at only 34 years old, one has to think he still has a couple good seasons left in the tank. It likely won't be long before the outfielder signs with another MLB team and finds his way into its lineup.

David Murphy signed a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, the Star Tribune's LaVelle Neal reports.Murphy reportedly isn't expected to spend much time with Triple-A Rochester, so one of the Twins' outfielders is on the hot seat. Red Sox's David Murphy: Opts out of Red Sox contract
David Murphy opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports. The minor league contract agreed to by the parties in late February included an opt out for March 27, which Murphy has taken advantage of. He's actually fared OK at the plate this spring, notching a .273/.286/.364 slash line with three RBI, five runs scored, and one walk versus four strikeouts. The Red Sox will have 48 hours to respond to Murphy's request, but the move may stick, as Scott Lauber of ESPN Boston speculates that Rusney Castillo may have to be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket in order to place Murphy on the 25-man roster.

Red Sox's David Murphy: Considering retirement, if...
David Murphy said he's considering retirement if he doesn't earn a spot on Boston's major league roster, WEEI.com reports.Murphy has an opt-out clause that comes due Mar. 27 and it's an awfully crowded situation in Boston's outfield. With Travis Shaw hitting his way into the team's plans for 2016, there doesn't appear to be room for a fifth outfielder. At this point in his career, Murphy said he has no interest in playing in the minors. "Retirement is definitely a possibility there," Murphy said. "I don't know. The way that everything has gone this offseason, something like that has crept up kind of quickly. It would definitely be part of my thought process, but I really don't know. I'd have to take a little bit of time to think about it, or to go home and stay in shape and wait for a phone call."

Angels' David Murphy: Club option declined by Angels
David Murphy's 2016 option was declined Wednesday, ESPN's Buster Olney reports. The Los Angeles Angels declined Murphy's $7 million dollar option making the 34-year-old outfielder a free agent this offseason. Considering his success this season (.283/.318/.421 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 361 at-bats) Murphy likely priced himself out of a return with the Angels, but he could a useful platoon option for a team looking for some power against right-handed pitching (he recorded just 23 at-bats against southpaws this season).
