Joey Votto: Announces retirement
Joey Votto announced his retirement from professional baseball Wednesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Votto signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays in March and had been hopeful to return to the majors this season, but his comeback attempt will now end after he posted a .489 OPS across 51 plate appearances with Triple-A Buffalo. The six-time All-Star spent 17 seasons in the big leagues with the Reds, slashing .294/.409/.511 with 356 home runs and 1,144 RBI over his career. He was named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 2010.

Joey Votto (ankle) returned to action for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday and has gone 2-for-5 with a home run, two walks, two RBI and three runs in three games since rejoining the club.Though Buffalo never placed Votto on its 7-day injured list, Votto had been out of action for three weeks before he was deployed as a pinch hitter Friday against Worcester. He served as a pinch hitter again Saturday, then started at designated hitter Sunday.
