Livan Hernandez finally calls it quits

Livan Hernandez, who recently turned 39 years old and has not pitched in the major leagues in two years, has announced his retirement. He last pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012, when he somehow won all three decisions despite a 7.68 ERA. Hernandez finishes his career with a 178-177 record and 4.44 ERA.

Hernandez's name creeps up in closer talk

The Brewers announced Thursday that they will be going with a closer-by-committee for the time being, after the failures of John Axford and Francisco Rodriguez to hold onto the job. MLB.com reported that all arms in the bullpen could be available to close games, but manager Ron Roenicke seemed to single out one surprising one in particular: veteran Livan Hernandez, who has been pitching out of the bullpen for the Brewers since they acquired him in June. “I know one thing about him: he isn’t going to be bothered by what’s the circumstance,” Roenicke said. “He’s going to throw strikes. And that’s not to say he won’t go out there and walk somebody, but he’s going to attack the hitters. I’m OK with that.”
