  • Drew VerHagen RP | STL

Tigers' Drew VerHagen: Designated for assignment Monday

VerHagen was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Monday.

VerHagen has allowed five runs over his last 2.1 innings of work to raise his ERA to 6.30, so the Tigers opted to cut him loose in order to bring up an additional position player (Mike Gerber) as the team heads to a National League ballpark for a series against the Pirates. The 27-year-old righty will have to clear waivers before the Tigers are able to outright him to Triple-A Toledo.

  • Jose Alvarado RP | PHI

Rays' Jose Alvarado: Grabs sixth hold despite struggles

Alvarado allowed two earned runs on two hits over 1.1 innings in a win over the Twins on Sunday. He also recorded a strikeout.

Alvarado's outing started off in typically strong fashion, as he induced an inning-ending double play from Eddie Rosario in the seventh. However, he yielded singles to Logan Morrison and Ehire Adrianza over the first four batters in the eighth and was charged with a pair of earned runs when both scored on Brian Dozier's RBI single off Sergio Romo. Alvarado has now surrendered three earned runs overall in his last two trips to the mound, but he's nevertheless notched holds in each of his last three appearances.

  • Ryan Yarbrough RP | NYY

Rays' Ryan Yarbrough: Gives up pair of runs in relief

Yarbrough allowed two earned runs on a hit and a walk over 1.1 innings during a win over the Twins on Sunday.

Yarbrough was the next man up after newly minted No. 4 starter Yonny Chirinos failed to make it out of the fifth, but he ran into his own problems. The 26-year-old southpaw has now been scored upon in each of his last four appearances, one which was a "bullpen day" start versus the Phillies on April 15. Factoring in Sunday's outing, Yarbrough has allowed nine runs (six earned) on eight hits and seven walks across 11.1 innings in his five trips to the mound during April.

  • Alex Colome RP | CHW

Rays' Alex Colome: Second win of series Sunday

Colome (2-2) struck out the side during a perfect ninth inning in a win over the Twins on Sunday.

Colome went a long way to allaying some concerns during the three-game set against the Twins, notching his first two victories of the season with a pair of perfect innings to close out games. Sunday, he got 12 of his 17 pitches into the strike zone while disposing of the potent trio of Miguel Sano, Eddie Rosario and Logan Morrison. The three scoreless efforts Colome has generated over his last four appearances have lowered his ERA from 10.80 to 7.00, and he appears to be settling down after a very rocky start to April.

  • White Sox's Danny Farquhar: Will remain hospitalized three weeks

White Sox vice president Ken Williams said that Farquhar (head) underwent a complicated surgery Saturday to relieve swelling around his brain, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Farquhar is in critical, but stable condition and will remain hospitalized for at least the next three weeks so he can be closely monitored by neurosurgeons.

Farquhar was rushed to the hospital shortly after collapsing in the dugout following his appearance in Friday's loss to the Astros. It was later revealed that he suffered a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm, which necessitated a medical procedure. At the request of Farquhar's family, the White Sox have declined to release information regarding the pitcher's treatment, so it's not guaranteed that he'll be discharged from the hospital when the three-week evaluation period ends. Ensuring Farquhar can enjoy a healthy, normal life going forward will be the White Sox's top priority rather than rushing him back on the mound.

  • Ken Giles RP | ATL

Astros' Ken Giles: Throws clean eighth inning Sunday

Giles struck out one in a perfect eighth inning of Sunday's 7-1 win over the White Sox.

It's been five games since the Astros needed someone to close out a game, so we're still not sure exactly where Giles stands. He came on in the eighth inning while Chris Devenski mopped up the ninth, which may be an indicator. The good news is that Giles is pitching after manager A.J. Hinch discussed some back tightness the reliever was experiencing last week. Giles hasn't walked a batter all season and hasn't allowed a hit in his last three outings, but the strikeouts are down -- just three over seven innings. This is a guy that fanned nearly 12 per nine innings last season. His velocity averaged 96 mph Sunday, a few ticks below where he usually sits, but not necessarily alarming. For now, you'll need to hold onto Giles for any potential saves and wait to hear definitive intelligence about his role going forward.

  • Blake Treinen RP | LAD

Athletics' Blake Treinen: Earns rare win

Treinen (1-1) pitched 1.2 clean innings and stuck out three to earn the win Sunday against the Red Sox.

Treinen entered a tied game in the eighth inning and inherited a runner on first. However, he proceeded to strike out the first two batters he faced and then continued on to pitch a clean ninth inning to earn his first win of the season. The Athletics haven't hesitated to use him across multiple innings this season as he has recorded more than three outs in six of his seven appearances. Despite two blown saves early on, Treinen remains locked into the closer role.

  • Athletics' Daniel Mengden: Has another solid outing

Mengden allowed one earned run on six hits while walking none and striking out five across 6.1 innings Sunday against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision.

Mengden pitched well enough to earn the win but didn't get enough run support. He showed strong control of the strike zone -- 72 of his 102 pitches were strikes -- and limited the Red Sox to just two extra-base hits. Through five starts this season, Mengden has yet to walk more than one batter in an outing and has just a 0.89 BB/9 as a result. Strikeouts are lacking in his profile, but he has pitched deep into his past two starts and has proven capable of providing solid ratios.

  • Jaime Barria RP | CLE

Angels' Jaime Barria: Returns to Triple-A

Barria was sent back to Triple-A Salt Lake following Sunday's loss to the Giants, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Barria lasted just two innings during Sunday's start, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one. As expected, he was optioned to Triple-A following the game, seeing as the Angels won't require a sixth starter until May 6 in Seattle. Through two starts, Barria is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and four strikeouts across seven innings.

  • Reynaldo Lopez RP | ATL

White Sox's Reynaldo Lopez: Takes no-decision Sunday

Lopez allowed one run on four hits and four walks while striking out two over five innings and was not on the hook for Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Astros.

Lopez was far from efficient, requiring 100 pitches to get through his five innings, but the White Sox were just happy to have a starter keep them in a game after losing the first two of the series by a combined 20-1. Pitch efficiency hasn't been a calling card for Lopez, who's managed to tap dance around 15 walks in 24 innings this season. He's done that mainly by limiting hits: Opponents are batting .129 off him. Lopez will next take the ball Friday on the road against Kansas City.
