  • Michael Fulmer RP | NYY

Tigers' Michael Fulmer: Stuggles in second big league start

Fulmer (1-1) got hit hard over five innings in Thursday's loss to the Indians. He allowed five runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out six.

After winning his major league debut last Friday at Minnesota, Fulmer was hammered right out of the gate Thursday. A majority of the damage came in the first inning when he gave up four runs on five hits, including a three-run homer to Mike Napoli. The 23-year-old right-hander has a nice repertoire of pitches, but hasn't been fooling hitters (17 hits in 10 innings). Fulmer has a great 95 mph fastball that has helped him rack up 10 strikeouts, but relying on a heater doesn't last long at the top level. He'll need to start working his off-speed pitches on the corners if the rookie is going to find success.

  • Ken Giles RP | ATL

Astros' Ken Giles: Struggles continue despite sixth hold

Giles was credited with his sixth hold of the year Thursday against Seattle even though he gave up two runs on a hit and a walk while recording just one out.

The early ugliness continues for Giles, who's now sitting on more runs allowed (12) than innings (11.2). On the bright side, his .382 BABIP and 3.20 xFIP point to shinier future results, but he's now an extremely long way from usurping Luke Gregerson's closer duties.

  • Chris Devenski RP | NYM

Astros' Chris Devenski: Impresses against Mariners despite no-decision

Devenski didn't receive a decision Thursday despite holding the Mariners to just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out six over six sparkling innings.

Yeah, that's a lot of sixes. After opening the year as Houston's long man, Devenski has transitioned into the rotation and looked good doing it -- including leaving this one in line for a victory before the bullpen blew it. The 25-year-old rookie has leaped nearly directly to the majors from Double-A (he was with Triple-A Fresno to start the year, but didn't make an appearance before being promoted), and the early returns have been promising. That said, his track record in the minors is rife with inconsistency and he may not get to hold his rotation spot for long, so don't let your expectations get too high.

  • Dillon Tate RP | TOR

Rangers' Dillon Tate: Activated off disabled list Thursday

Tate was activated off the disabled list at Low-A Hickory on Thursday, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Tate had been out since April 20 with a hamstring strain, but he's feeling well enough to return to the Hickory rotation. The right-hander hadn't allowed a run and struck out 16 batters in 10.2 innings pitched, so he'll try to continue this torrid pace upon his return.

  • Tony Zych RP | NYY

Mariners' Tony Zych: Expected to miss four weeks

Zych (shoulder) is expected to miss roughly four weeks, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

The Mariners are only listing "soreness" as Zych's diagnosis, but it's apparently relatively severe, and the right-hander isn't likely to return until early June. The team called up right-hander Steve Johnson from Triple-A earlier in the week to take Zych's roster spot.

  • Tommy Kahnle RP | BOS

White Sox's Tommy Kahnle: Recalled from Triple-A

Kahnle was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday.

The 26-year-old righty has a 2.45 ERA in 11 relief innings at Triple-A, and should serve in a low-leverage role out of Chicago's bullpen for the time being.

  • Alex Colome RP | CHW

Rays' Alex Colome: Notches sixth save with two-strikeout inning Wednesday

Colome secured his sixth save by pitching an inning of one-hit ball in Wednesday's 8-5 victory over the Dodgers. He also recorded a pair of strikeouts.

It was a nice bounce-back effort for the hard-throwing reliever, who'd given up a homer and a pair of earned runs to the Blue Jays in less than an inning last Sunday. Colome is a perfect six-for-six in save opportunities this season, and as expected, has been the de facto closer while Brad Boxberger (abdomen) continues his recovery. Factoring out the aforementioned outing versus Toronto, Colome has only surrendered one other earned run all season, and owns a stellar 12:3 K:BB.

  • Matt Andriese RP | MIA

Rays' Matt Andriese: Could be in line for spot start Sunday versus Angels

Andriese could be in line for a call-up and spot start Sunday versus the Angels, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The speculation stems from manager Kevin Cash's comment Wednesday that his starter for Sunday's matchup is "to be determined." With the Angels hitting left-handed pitching well, and southpaw Matt Moore having been hit hard against the Dodgers on Tuesday, the potential personnel shift leaves Andriese as one of two likely candidates (with Erasmo Ramirez being the other) for the job. The 26-year-old has a 1-2 record and 3.41 ERA over six starts at Triple-A Durham this season, but is coming off a 14-strikeout performance on Tuesday versus the Indianapolis Indians. Andriese is 3-5 with a 4.11 ERA over his 25 major league appearances, with eight of those being starts.

  • Matt Moore RP | BOS

Rays' Matt Moore: May see next start moved down

Moore may be pulled from his scheduled start against the Angels this Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Manager Kevin Cash has labled his starter for Sunday's contest "to be determined," with speculation that either Matt Andriese or Erasmo Ramirez may get the call against the southpaw-mashing Angels. After notching quality starts in three of the previous four outings, Moore was touched up for eight hits (including two homers) and seven earned runs by the Dodgers on Tuesday. The change, if it does occur, would likely only involve a one-day delay in starts for the 26-year-old, as opposed to a skipped turn in the rotation.

  • Red Sox's Craig Kimbrel: Ninth save in Wednesday's win

Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his nine save of the season in Wednesday night's 5-2 win over the White Sox. He converted his fourth straight save opportunity.

There had been some bubbling concern after Kimbrel blew a save 10 days ago in Houston. At the time, his ERA was 5.00 and he had allowed five hits and five walks in nine innings. Since then, he's been perfect with just one walk sullying his line in his last four appearances.
