  • Ryan Pressly RP | CHC

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Saddled with Opening Day loss

Pressly (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Yankees, allowing a run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one.

Pressly was tasked with preserving a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning against the middle of the Yankees order. The right-hander surrendered a lead-off double to Aaron Judge, who would come around to score on an Alex Verdugo sacrifice fly. It's a tough start to the year for the 35-year-old Pressly, who was already destined for a reduced role after Houston brought in Josh Hader to handle closing duties. Pressly converted 31 of 37 save chances last season, sporting a 3.58 ERA with 74:16 K:BB over 65.1 innings.

  • Athletics' Scott Alexander: Heads to IL

The Athletics placed Alexander on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left rib contusion.

According to MLB.com, Alexander has been taking part in plyometric work since suffering the injury earlier this month, but he has yet to resume playing catch. Alexander won't require much buildup time as a matchup lefty who typically doesn't work more than an inning in his appearances, but he's still expected to be sidelined beyond the minimum 15 days.

  • Freddy Tarnok RP | MIA

Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Officially hits injured list

The Athletics placed Tarnok (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Tarnok's placement on the IL was expected after he was shut down from throwing in early March due to inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip. Manager Mark Kotsay has already confirmed Tarnok will begin the season at Triple-A Las Vegas when he's healthy. The right-hander logged 14.2 innings across five appearances (one start) with the Athletics last season and is expected to see time in the majors during the 2024 campaign.

  • Tyler Beede RP | CHC

Guardians' Tyler Beede: Added to 40-man, active roster

The Guardians selected Beede's contract from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.

Cleveland opened up room for Beede on the 40-man roster by placing Trevor Stephan (elbow) on the 60-day injured list. The 30-year-old Beede is expected to work as a long reliever after striking out 12 while allowing six earned runs on 14 hits and five walks over 13 innings during Cactus League play.

  • Guardians' James Karinchak: Goes on 60-day IL

The Guardians placed Karinchak on the 60-day injured list Thursday with right shoulder inflammation.

According to MLB.com, Karinchak reported to camp dealing with right shoulder fatigue, but he made enough progress to get clearance to begin a throwing program March 11. The Guardians' decision to have Karinchak open the season on the 60-day IL perhaps signals that his throwing sessions aren't going as well as hoped, as he won't be eligible to make his 2024 debut until late May. Karinchak will likely continue to build back up at the Guardians' spring training facility in Arizona over the next few weeks before potentially heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Sam Hentges RP | SF

Guardians' Sam Hentges: Placed on IL

The Guardians placed Hentges (finger) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

According to MLB.com, Hentges traveled with the Guardians on their season-opening road trip, despite being placed on the IL due to left middle finger swelling. Hentges' inclusion on the road trip could imply that he's in store for a brief stay on the IL, as he already resumed throwing before camp ended and may soon be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Xzavion Curry RP | MIA

Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Goes on IL with illness

The Guardians placed Curry on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a viral illness.

Curry and Ben Lively are opening the season on the shelf due to a respiratory virus that made its way around the Cleveland clubhouse during spring training, according to MLB.com. Curry will be eligible for activation April 9 and could serve as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen once he's healthy.

  • Eduard Bazardo RP | SEA

Mariners' Eduard Bazardo: Shut down with rotator cuff strain

The Mariners placed Bazardo on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right rotator cuff strain.

Bazardo was sidelined for the entirety of spring training with the injury, but he appears poised to begin his throwing program soon and is expected to return from the IL near the end of April, per MLB.com. The 28-year-old right-hander is likely to work in lower-leverage spots out of the bullpen once he's activated.

  • Mariners' Gregory Santos: Shelved with lat strain

The Mariners placed Santos (lat) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Santos was shut down March 11 after he was diagnosed with a right lat strain. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday, and if the testing reveals that the inflammation in his lat has subsided, Santos could be cleared to start at throwing program in the coming days. Whenever he's able to make his Seattle debut, the right-hander will likely deployed as a setup man in front of closer Andres Munoz.

  • Matt Brash RP | SEA

Mariners' Matt Brash: Heads to IL

The Mariners placed Brash (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Brash sustained an elbow injury early in camp and didn't end up pitching in the Cactus League, though he was fortunate to avoid surgery after he was diagnosed with inflammation following a visit with Dr. Keith Meister, per MLB.com. The right-hander has since resumed throwing bullpen sessions and is likely to throw off the mound again this weekend before potentially gaining clearance to face hitters. Brash seems to be tracking toward a return from the IL in mid-to-late April.
