Padres' Mike Clevinger: Leaves during second inning

Clevinger exited with an athletic trainer during the second inning of Tuesday's NLDS Game 1 against the Dodgers, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The right-hander started the game with his usual velocity but was pulled two pitches into the second frame after delivering a 90-mph fastball, about five mph below his average velocity. Clevinger was unavailable for the NL Wild Card Round after dealing with the elbow impingement at the close of the regular season, and it appears he's not fully over the injury. If the 25-year-old is replaced on the roster for the remainder of the series, he won't be eligible to pitch during the NLCS should the Padres advance past the Dodgers, though it remains unclear if he'll be healthy enough for that to be a consideration.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Braves' Max Fried: Lasts only four innings

Fried gave up four runs on six hits and zero walks over four innings during the Game 1 win over the Marlins in the NLDS. He had four strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision.

Most of the damage came during the third inning as Miami tallied three runs on four hits, including a two-run double from Garrett Cooper. Fried could be available out of the bullpen toward the tail end of the five-game series. Otherwise, he lines up to start Game 1 of the NCLS if the Braves can complete the series victory.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Takes loss in NLDS opener

Alcantara took the loss during Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves on Tuesday after surrendering five runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk over six innings.

The right-hander was sitting on a quality start with three runs allowed through six frames, but he returned for the seventh inning, gave up two infield singles and was removed. Both baserunners then came across to score as Atlanta put up six runs during the inning. Alcantara would need to pitch on short rest if he's to make another start or appear out of the bullpen during the five-game series, otherwise he lines up to pitch Game 1 of the NLCS if the Marlins can recover to beat the Braves.

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Starting Game 1

Clevinger (elbow) has made the Padres' roster for their NLDS matchup against the Dodgers and will start Game 1 on Tuesday, freelance baseball writer Robert Murray reports.

Just how long Clevinger is able to pitch Tuesday remains to be seen. He's only thrown a single inning since Sept. 13, as his penultimate regular-season start was canceled due to biceps tightness and his final outing was cut short after a single frame with the same issue. He was later also diagnosed with an elbow impingement and wound up missing the NL Wild Card Round. The Padres have enough faith in him to let him start Tuesday's series opener, however, and his availability will be a huge boost to the underdogs, as he cruised to a 3.02 ERA in eight starts this season.

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Could start Game 1

Clevinger (elbow) is in contention to start Game 1 of the NLDS against the Dodgers on Tuesday, freelance baseball writer Robert Murray reports.

Clevinger has thrown twice off flat ground recently as well as one bullpen session. He's been pain-free after all three. The Padres have yet to finalize their rotation or roster, but it appears as though the righty has a good chance to play a role after missing the end of the regular season with a strained right elbow.

  • Corbin Burnes SP | ARI

Brewers' Corbin Burnes: Won't need offseason procedure

Brewers general manager David Stearns said Monday that Burnes won't require offseason surgery and is expected to make a full recovery from his left oblique strain with rest and rehab, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Though Burnes' oblique strain was significant enough to sideline him for the team's three-game National League Wild Card series with the Dodgers last week, the 25-year-old apparently isn't dealing with any significant structural damage to his core-muscle area. His activity may remain limited for the next couple of weeks while he looks to move past the issue, but Burnes should otherwise be in store for a normal offseason. Burnes should head into 2021 as a likely top-100 selection in fantasy drafts after dazzling during the abbreviated 2020 campaign with a 2.11 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 88 strikeouts while allowing only two home runs in 59.2 innings.

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Expected back for divisional round

The Padres are optimistic that Clevinger (elbow) will be available to pitch at some point during their divisional series with the Dodgers that begins Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

San Diego came away encouraged with how Clevinger looked during a high-intensity bullpen session Sunday, and assuming he avoids any setbacks with his strained right elbow in the next day or two, he should have a spot on the 28-man roster that the Padres submit Tuesday. Given that Clevinger hasn't pitched in a competitive game since Sept. 23, he may not be ready to reclaim a normal starting role during the series with the Dodgers. The Padres only have two full-time rotation members (Chris Paddack and Zach Davies) available for the NLDS at the moment, as Dinelson Lamet (biceps) is unlikely to pitch during the series.

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Throws high-intensity bullpen

Clevinger (elbow) threw a bullpen session at high intensity in Arlington on Sunday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

Clevinger could return to action during the NLDS against the Dodgers, and his throwing session Sunday appears to be a good sign as long as he feels good afterward. The right-hander was sidelined for the NL Wild Card Series while dealing with a right elbow posterior impingement.

  • Jack Flaherty SP | DET

Cardinals' Jack Flaherty: Fans eight against Padres

Flaherty allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings Friday as he was charged with the loss in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Padres.

Flaherty sputtered at the end of the regular season as he allowed at least three runs in three of his final five starts. He was more effective Friday in the decisive Game 3 matchup against San Diego, but the Cardinals' offense was unable to generate any run production as the Padres used nine pitchers Friday. Flaherty recorded a 4.91 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 40.1 innings during the shortened 2020 regular season.

  • Yu Darvish SP | SD

Cubs' Yu Darvish: Gives up two runs Friday

Darvish allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings as he was charged with the loss Friday in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Marlins.

Darvish began Friday's contest with six scoreless innings, but he was unable to get any run support from the Cubs' offense. As a result, the two runs that Darvish allowed in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Marlins completed the sweep to advance to the NLDS. The right-hander made a strong case for the NL Cy Young Award during the abbreviated regular season as he posted a career-best 2.01 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 93:14 K:BB over 76 innings across 12 starts.
