  • Smith (undisclosed) played six minutes off the bench in Saturday's 120-116 preseason loss to the Hornets and went scoreless (0-1 FG, 0-1 3Pt) while adding a rebound, two assists and a steal. Smith is competing for a roster spot before the 2025-26 season opener against the Spurs on Oct. 22. The lack of minutes he had in this game doesn't bode well for his chances. Still, at least he was healthy enough to play after missing Monday's exhibition against the Thunder.

  • Smith (undisclosed) participated in half of Tuesday's practice, Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports. Smith missed Monday's exhibition versus the Thunder, and it's still not clear what exactly he's dealing with. For now, he can be considered questionable for Saturday's exhibition against Charlotte.

  • Smith (undisclosed) has been ruled out for Monday's exhibition versus the Thunder, Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com reports. It's unclear exactly what Smith is dealing with, but we wouldn't read much into him missing a meaningless preseason game. He's currently on a training camp deal, so there are no guarantees he'll be on the regular-season roster when the season officially gets underway.

  • The Mavericks signed Smith to a training camp contract Thursday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports. Smith rejoins the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft out of NC State. The 26-year-old guard has since bounced around the league, including stints with the Knicks, Pistons, Trail Blazers, Hornets and Nets. His most recent stint in the league was with Brooklyn during the 2023-24 campaign, where he made 56 regular-season appearances, averaging 6.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, shooting 43.5 percent from the field (career high) and 29.4 percent from three-point range. After failing to find a new team in the NBA last season, Smith went overseas and played for Real Madrid in Liga ACB before parting ways with the team Feb. 18.

Smith announced Tuesday that he is leaving Real Madrid and intends to make a return to the NBA this season, NBA reporter Chris Haynes reports.
