Smith was released by the Panthers on Thursday, Myles Simmons of the team's official website reports.
Smith signed a one-year contract with the team in March but things ultimately did not pan out. He spent the last two seasons in Cleveland providing depth on the defensive line. The veteran will now need to find a new landing spot.
