  • Stafford completed 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards with no touchdowns and one interception while rushing twice for minus-1 yard during the Rams' 27-7 Week 1 loss to the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. The reigning NFL MVP looked anything but during a shockingly poor performance by his side of the ball, and Stafford finished with his lowest passing yardage total since Week 11 of last season. The veteran signal-caller tossed his one interception shortly before the halfway point of the second quarter on a pass intended for Puka Nacua just inside the 49ers' 15-yard line, a play that was costly both from the standpoint of the potential scoring opportunity it short-circuited and the fact it led to a San Francisco touchdown. Stafford's first chance to atone comes in a Week 2 home matchup against what is expected to be a fearsome Giants pass rush on Monday night, Sept. 21.

  • Rams' Matthew Stafford: QBs to Start
    By Jamey Eisenberg

We'll see how Stafford and the Rams do against the 49ers in Australia, but Stafford loved facing San Francisco in America last season. In two games against the 49ers in 2025, Stafford combined for 669 passing yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions, and he scored at least 31.6 Fantasy points in each outing. There were 10 times where a quarterback had at least two touchdown passes against San Francisco, and Stafford should start out hot as the reigning NFL MVP.

  • Stafford once again didn't play any offensive snaps during the preseason. Stafford hasn't taken a preseason snap since the summer of 2019, but the difference this year from last is that he's healthy. While he dealt with back issues last summer, he's been a full participant in training camp this time around. Despite the back trouble, Stafford still started all 17 regular-season games in 2025 and led the league with 4,707 passing yards, 46 touchdowns and a 7.7 percent touchdown rate en route to winning the MVP Award. He finished as fantasy's overall QB3 but is being drafted on average as the QB12 this year.

  • Stafford and Davante Adams have been building a stronger rapport during training camp, Stu Jackson of the Rams' official site reports. After Stafford missed all of training camp last summer due to a lingering back injury, the two rarely practiced together before the start of the regular season. While Adams led the league with 14 receiving touchdowns, he managed just one 100-yard receiving game in 14 regular-season appearances. Some of that had to do with Puka Nacua dominating targets, but it could also be chalked up to he and Stafford not totally being comfortable with each other. That hasn't been the case this summer, as Adams has been a standout at Rams camp. "When you're as intentional as they are, repetition ends up being the mother of learning," coach Sean McVay said. "It's also the best way to be able to develop rapport with each other and that's so important whether you're a center playing with a guard, a guard playing with a tackle, or quarterbacks (with) receivers." Adams has massive touchdown upside, but it also wouldn't be a shock to see him flirt with 1,000 yards again after he posted just 60 catches for 789 yards during the 2025 regular season as a touchdown-or-bust type of fantasy player.

  • Stafford and the Rams agreed on a one-year, $55 million contract extension Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Stafford was set to enter the 2026 campaign in the final year of his two-year, $84 million contract that he signed with Los Angeles ahead of the 2025 season, but he now will be under contract through 2027. The 38-year-old is coming off of an MVP campaign in which he compiled 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns while completing 65 percent of his passes over 17 regular-season contests. His new deal is worth up to $60 million dollars, so Stafford could earn up to $105 million over the next two seasons. The Rams drafted the quarterback's successor in Ty Simpson 13th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Simpson may get a chance to sit behind Stafford for multiple years.
