Alonso signed a one-year contract with the Saints on Thursday after a successful workout with the team earlier in the day, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Alonso left New Orleans after the 2019 campaign to sign with the 49ers, but he has missed the past two seasons after suffering a torn ACL in January 2020. Returning to the Saints was reportedly the 31-year-old's top choice as the team was the first one reached out to by his representation this offseason, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. Alonso collected 31 tackles over 13 games in New Orleans three years ago, and he should slot into a backup role at middle linebacker behind Demario Davis.

The Saints placed Alonso (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Saturday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. Alonso tore his ACL in January and hasn't practiced yet, so it's not surprising that he'll be shut down for at least six more weeks. The veteran linebacker battled an assortment of injuries in 2019 and played a minimal role as a result, so he wasn't locked in as the clear starting middle linebacker. Craig Robertson is expected to start at the position to begin the year, and Alonso will battle for reps once he's fully healthy.

Alonso (thigh) didn't practice Wednesday, Katherine Terrell of The Athletic reports. It was just a walkthrough, but it's discouraging that Alonso was unable to participate. To prepare for the possibility Alonso can't play Sunday against the 49ers, the Saints signed Manti Te'o. Thursday and Friday's sessions will provide more information about Alonso's game-time status.

Alonso is considered day-to-day after leaving last Thursday's game with a thigh injury, Katherine Terrell of The Athletic reports. Alonso's status for this week's game against the 49ers remains up in the air, but more should be known on his potential availability when the Saints resume practice Wednesday. Manti Te'o signed to bolster the team's linebacker depth, in the meantime.

Alonso played only four snaps on defense (six percent) during Sunday's 27-9 loss to the Rams. Alonso notched one solo tackle despite his minimal role and played two snaps on special teams. The veteran linebacker was dealing with an undisclosed injury when New Orleans acquired him from Miami on Sept. 1, and he still appears to be getting up to speed with the new defensive scheme. Alonso may not manage to carve out a starting role in the Saints' defense, but he could conceivably see increased usage as the season progresses.
