  • Russ Yeast: Let go by Carolina
    By RotoWire

The Panthers waived Yeast from the active roster Tuesday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports. Yeast was signed to the Panthers' 53-man roster from the practice squad Sept. 24 after being let go by the Rams on Sept. 14. He played just seven snaps on special teams in Week 4 against the Bengals and was a healthy scratch for Week 5 against the Bears. Assuming he clear waivers, Yeast could stick around and return to the Panthers' practice squad or explore his options elsewhere.

Yeast was signed to the 53-man roster from the Panthers' practice squad Tuesday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports. Yeast's move to the active roster coincides with Jordan Fuller (hamstring) being placed on IR. The former will now take on a depth role in Carolina's secondary, with Nick Scott expected to take over the starting duties at strong safety.

The Rams waived Yeast on Saturday. Despite starting in nine regular-season games for the Rams last season, Yeast played just one defensive snap in Week 1 against the Lions. Should he clear waivers, the 2022 seventh-round pick will look to join a team in need of depth in the secondary.

  • Yeast has seen work at safety and slot corner during training camp but isn't the favorite to land either role, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. Yeast opened the 2023 campaign as a starter at safety for the Rams but failed to keep the job after the team's Week 10 bye. With Jordan Fuller now in Carolina, he was expected to have a chance to return to the top of the depth chart, but the emergence of Quentin Lake and the signing of Kamren Curl will likely relegate Yates to a backup role, while Cobie Durant is expected to earn top slot duties.

  • Yeast recorded 61 tackles (37 solo) and five passes defended during the 2023 regular season over 17 games played. Yeast was relegated mostly to special teams in 2022, but he had a strong training camp and earned a role as a starting safety to begin 2023. Despite beginning the year as a starter, Yeast reverted to a backup behind Jordan Fuller and Quentin Lake after a Week 10 bye, failing to eclipse a 45 percent snap share in all but two games the rest of the way. Fuller is an unrestricted free agent after the season, so Yeast, who still has two years left on his rookie deal, may get another chance to earn a role as a starter if Fuller doesn't return.
