Charlie Whitehurst: Released with injury settlement

Charlie Whitehurst (knee) was released by the Browns with an injury settlement Tuesday.Whitehurst replaced an injured Cody Kessler (ribs) in Week 5 and held his own, but he suffered an injury of his own in the process. The extent of Whitehurst's setback is not certain, but it apparently would have cost him some time, so the Browns decided to remove him from the roster and replace him with a healthy quarterback in Kevin Hogan. Whitehurst could hook on with a new team once he is back at 100 percent.

Browns' Charlie Whitehurst: Hyper-extends left knee in loss

Charlie Whitehurst hyper-extended his left knee toward the end of Sunday's game against the Titans, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. The team's healthiest quarterback at that point, Whitehurst returned to take a knee on the final snap, which doesn't necessarily mean he was healthy enough to play. However, it sounds as if Cody Kessler (ribs) and/or Josh McCown (collarbone) will be ready for Week 6 against the Titans, rendering Whitehurt's health status of little importance to the team. Then again, it's a bit too early to make assumptions, so Whitehurst does have an outside shot to get a start, if his hyper-extension isn't too serious. He replaced an injured Kessler on Sunday, completing 14 of 24 passes for 182 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.

Browns' Charlie Whitehurst: Throws touchdown in season debut

Charlie Whitehurst completed 14 of 24 passes for 182 yards with a touchdown and an interception against the Patriots on Sunday.Whitehurst was called upon when Cody Kessler (chest) went down and was able hold his own against a tough New England defense. He was picked off once but lofted a perfect 17-yard touchdown pass to Connor Hamlett in the fourth quarter. It remains to be seen how serious Kessler's injury is, but should he have to sit in Week 6, Whitehurst will be under center once again versus the Titans.

Browns' Charlie Whitehurst: Officially signs contract

Charlie Whitehurst signed with the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. As expected, Whitehurst was signed to serve as Cody Kessler's backup, with Josh McCown (shoulder) out for at least one week. Charlie Whitehurst: Expected to join Browns

Charlie Whitehurst is expected to sign with the Browns this week, NFL.com reports. With Josh McCown (shoulder) unlikely to play Sunday against Miami, the Browns will turn to their third starting quarterback in as many games. Third-round selection Cody Kessler is expected to do the honors, but Whitehurst could eventually get a look if the rookie struggles. Kevin Hogan, who is currently on the practice squad, might also be an option at some point this season.

Colts' Charlie Whitehurst: Placed on IR

Charlie Whitehurst (hamstring) has been placed on injured reserve, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports. With Andrew Luck (kidney) and Matt Hasselbeck (shoulder) uncertain for Week 17, there's some chance Stephen Morris could get the start in a game that's unlikely to have any impact on the playoff picture. In addition to needing a win and a Texans loss, the Indianapolis Colts need at least six other games to go in their favor to hand them the strength-of-victory tiebreaker. Whitehurst, meanwhile, is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Colts' Charlie Whitehurst: Pulls hammy in win

Charlie Whitehurst pulled a hamstring during Sunday's win over the Dolphins, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports. If Andrew Luck (kidney) isn't ready to return, it isn't clear that Whitehurst or Matt Hasselbeck (shoulder) will be available. Stephen Morris is the No. 4 quarterback, and while it seems likely that at least one of the other three signal-callers will be available, the Indianapolis Colts have almost no chance of qualifying for the playoffs, according to ESPN.com.

Colts' Charlie Whitehurst: Replaces injured Hasselbeck

Charlie Whitehurst completed nine passes off of 14 pass attempts for 78 yards in Sunday's win over Miami. Whitehurst came in to replace an injured Matt Hasselbeck, who is reportedly not optimistic about playing in Week 17, Kevin Bowen of Indianapolis Colts.com reports.Whitehurst entered the game late in the second quarter and the Colts offensive approach changed dramatically. With Matt Hasselback under center, Indianapolis dropped back on 16 of 23 plays. Whitehurst, however, dropped back just 14 times on 30 plays. The fact that the Colts were nursing a lead can be cited as a reason for the team's conservative approach, but with their backup quarterback sporting a QB rating of just 50.3 it is hard to blame them. With Week 17 representing a must-win situation for Indianapolis, expect the team to keep their fingers crossed that Hasselbeck or Luck get healthy. Otherwise it will be Whitehurst taking on a Tennessee defense that, surprisingly, entered the week ranked No. 9 against the pass.

Colts' Charlie Whitehurst: Comes on for Hasselbeck again

Charlie Whitehurst came on for an injured Matt Hasselbeck (back) and completed 1 of 2 passes for 13 yards Sunday against the Texans. Hasselbeck returned for the next series, which pushed Whitehurst back to the bench.Whitehurst has now come on for Hasselbeck in three consecutive games, as the 40-year-old veteran continues to battle back and rib injuries. Quarterback Andrew Luck (abdomen/kidney) has not been cleared for full contact yet, so it's unclear who will ultimately start in Week 16 against the Dolphins. All that being said, Whitehurst would be a fairly poor fantasy option if he ends up being the starter.

Colts' Charlie Whitehurst: Replaces Hasselbeck again

Charlie Whitehurst completed two of eight passes for eight yards and an interception Sunday against the Jaguars, coming on twice for Matt Hasselbeck, who was eventually knocked out with a rib injury.Hasselbeck threw for 252 yards before exiting the game, and while Whitehurst wasn't able to get much going, he could be forced into action if Hasselbeck has to miss any time. On the other hand, Andrew Luck could return from his abdomen and kidney issues in Week 15 against the Texans, which would make Hasselbeck's availability moot with regard to Whitehurst.
