Colts cut 14, including OL Donald Thomas

The Indianapolis Colts made their first wave of cuts Monday, trimming 14 to get to 76 players on the roster. Included in those moves was the release of guard Donald Thomas, once thought to be a key figure on the offensive line, whose effectiveness was cut short by injury, per the Indianapolis Star.  The guard last played in a game in September of 2013, and he had just been activated from the physically unable to perform list Friday. In addition, cutting Thomas saves the Colts $3.75 million against the salary cap.

Colts move around offensive linemen at OTAs

The Indianapolis Colts are trying offensive linemen at different positions in the team's offseason workouts.  Part of the reason for the shuffling is that a pair of linemen, right tackle Gosder Cherilus and right guard Donald Thomas, aren't taking part in OTAs. Left guard Jack Mewhort filled in at right tackle and newly acquired Todd Herremans was at right guard.  At center, Jonotthan Harrison appears to have the early edge over Khaled Holmes.  "We've got some guys that we're moving around," coach Chuck Pagano said, per ESPN. "Come training camp, still going to be some competition."

Colts G Donald Thomas (quad) still not 100 percent

Indianapolis Colts guard Donald Thomas did not play during the 2014 season due to a torn quad and Thomas said he's still recovering from the injury, reports ESPN.com. "If I had to put a gauge on it percentage wise, I couldn't give you that right now," Thomas said. "My main thing is just I'm not 100 percent right now. The hardest thing about that is the being able to try to get back to that." Thomas has played in two games since signing with the Colts before the 2013 season. "At the end of the day, it's frustrating at times because nobody knows how I look 100 percent healthy," he said. "It's not an easy feeling to go through something like this, but at the same time, you have to deal with it and take it day by day and try to get back and hopefully when the dust settles show everybody what you can do."

Colts trying to find right center

The Indianapolis Colts have issues at center after they released Samson Satele in March, and Phil Costa retired in April, leaving Khaled Holmes, the likely starter, and Thomas Austin as the centers on the roster, reports ESPN. The Colts could also turn to Donald Thomas, who didn't make it through two full games last season because of a torn tendon in his quad and a torn bicep. But he could be thrown in the mix if needed. "If you go through most rosters and depth charts, you usually will have, generally, your starting center, your more true center, so to speak," Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said. "Then, you’ll have usually a guard who can snap, or a guy who's a guard first that can also snap and play at a winning level as your second center. We have three snappers now. We'll keep our options open."Like all position groups, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you came from, we've been pretty consistent, the best players play. Whoever is going to start for this team in 2014 has to produce and play at a winning level week in and week out, period."
