  • C.J. Beathard QB | JAC

    49ers' C.J. Beathard: Clear No. 3 option

Beathard will be a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Jets, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Sunday will mark the second consecutive game for which Beathard will be inactive this season, signalling he's the clear third option on the depth chart. It's unlikely that the Iowa product will make an impact from a fantasy perspective, barring injuries, and Nick Mullens will continue to serve as the team's back up behind Jimmy Garoppolo.

  • Browns' Baker Mayfield: Much smoother in Week 2 win

Mayfield completed 16 of 23 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Browns' 35-30 win over the Bengals on Thursday. He also rushed three times for six yards.

After a fairly dismal season-opening performance in a thorny matchup against the Ravens, Mayfield was set up nicely for a bounce-back effort in Week 2, considering the significant step down in competition. The oft-maligned quarterback mostly maximized his favorable circumstances, helping the Browns jump out to a 14-3 lead via a 43-yard touchdown connection with Odell Beckham. Mayfield subsequently capped off another second-quarter scoring drive with a six-yard toss to Kareem Hunt, and although he did throw an early fourth-quarter interception, it came on a deep downfield pass into Bengals territory. The numbers Thursday weren't markedly different for Mayfield than his 189-yard, one-touchdown, one-interception performance against Baltimore, but the fact he went 7-for-9 when targeting his top duo of Beckham and Jarvis Landry offers reason for optimism. Mayfield will look to keep his momentum going in a Week 3 home date against the Washington Football Team on Sunday, Sept. 27.

  • Joe Burrow QB | CIN

Bengals' Joe Burrow: Strong numbers in loss

Burrow completed 37 of 61 passes for 316 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Bengals' 35-30 loss to the Browns on Thursday. He also rushed seven times for 19 yards and had two fumbles, losing one.

The rookie finished with a strong line despite much of his success coming in the shorter areas of the field, as evidenced by his 5.2 yards per attempt. Burrow did appear to take another step forward in his development through sheer volume of reps if nothing else, and he connected with three different pass catchers in C.J. Uzomah (Achilles), Mike Thomas and Tyler Boyd for his trio of scoring tosses. Burrow's last two scoring drives impressively covered extended stretches of the field, as he led the Bengals on marches of 83 yards on 14 plays and 75 yards over 16 plays in the fourth quarter. The 2020 first overall pick will now get some extra time to rest his arm, work on ball security and build further rapport with his pass-catching corps ahead of a tough Week 3 road test against the Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 27.

  • Drew Lock QB | SEA

Broncos' Drew Lock: Suffers second loss as starter

Lock completed 22 of 33 pass attempts for 216 yards and a touchdown during Monday's 16-14 loss to Tennesee. He also picked up five yards on three rushing attempts, fumbling twice but losing possession neither time.

The second-year signal-caller had some difficulties collecting snaps from center Lloyd Cushenberry at various points throughout the contest, but he was mostly in sync with his young skill-position group. Noah Fant and Tim Patrick each pulled in 80-plus percent of their intended targets, though a pair of drops from first-round rookie Jerry Jeudy will be something to clean up for next week. Lock may now sit at 4-2 as an NFL starter, but his fantasy prospects have diminished since a three-touchdown outing against the Texans in his second career start last December. Over his past four outings, Lock has just three combined touchdown passes and an average of 198.3 passing yards per game. He now prepares for a Week 2 matchup against a Steelers defense that picked off Daniel Jones twice in a 26-16 win Monday.

  • Ryan Tannehill QB | TEN

Titans' Ryan Tannehill: Multi-TD streak continues

Tannehill completed 29 of 43 pass attempts for 249 yards and two touchdowns during Monday's 16-14 win against Denver. He also picked up 14 rushing yards on three carries.

The 2019 Comeback Player of the Year sailed a ball over the outstretched fingertips of A.J. Brown in the final 30 seconds of regulation, setting up seemingly snake-bitten Stephen Gostkowski (who was 0-for-3 on field goals at that point) with a game-winning 25-yard kick. In spite of his team picking up the win, Tannehill was frustrated with himself postgame for the missed throw, though he did post multiple passing TDs in his eighth consecutive regular-season game. The 32-year-old now owns a sterling 18:2 TD:INT since Week 10 of 2019, while averaging better than 250 passing yards per game during that span. Week 2 presents a matchup against a Jaguars defense that surrendered 363 passing yards to Indianapolis in its season debut.

  • Daniel Jones QB | IND

Giants' Daniel Jones: Throws costly pick in loss

Jones completed 26 of 41 passes for 279 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Monday night's 26-16 loss to the Steelers. He also rushed four times for 22 yards.

Jones was inconsistent Monday, showing promise at times while disappointing at others. In terms of positives, Jones picked up where he left off with fellow second-year Giant Darius Slayton, who he not only threw a 41-yard touchdown to early, but also a seven-yard score late. However, following the opening TD, Jones' next throw was intercepted at the line of scrimmage, setting up an easy ensuing Steelers score. Then, after stringing together a 19-play drive featuring his arm and legs to begin the third quarter, Jones foolishly tried to keep a play alive and was hit as he threw, resulting in an end-zone pick. Much like his rookie season, Monday's display from Jones had its highs and lows, so he'll continue to aim for more stable success in Week 2 versus the Bears.

  • Tua Tagovailoa QB | ATL

Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa: Remaining in backup role

Tagovailoa will remain Miami's No. 2 quarterback heading into Week 2's divisional matchup against the Bills, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.

The Dolphins didn't appear to consider putting Tagovailoa in the game during Sunday's season-opening loss to the Patriots, in which Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three picks and failed to move the offense, so it looks like the team is committed to allowing the rookie time to develop. However, if Fitzpatrick logs a similarly poor performance against Buffalo, Tagovailoa could begin building a case to enter the fray.

  • Colts' Jacoby Brissett: Sacked on lone play

Brissett was sacked on his only play in Sunday's 27-20 loss at Jacksonville. He went under center and ran a quarterback option play at the goal line.

Coach Frank Reich said during the preseason that Brissett could play a handful of snaps per game to take advantage of his mobility. Brissett was brought in for such a situation Sunday, but the play was read easily by the Jacksonville defense and resulted in a critical losing play. Reich may have to reconsider Brissett's usage as a result. Brissett otherwise will serve as the backup to Philip Rivers.

  • Brian Hoyer QB | LV

Patriots' Brian Hoyer: Backs up Newton in opener

Hoyer served as the Patriots' top backup during Sunday's divisional win over the Dolphins, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.

Hoyer appears to have emerged ahead of Jarrett Stidham in New England's backup competition, though Cam Newton's grip on the starting job looks ironclad after an impressive Week 1 performance. Newton hasn't suited up for a full 16-game season since 2017, so his durability does remain something of a question mark, but Hoyer's only path to seeing game action in 2020 likely would be for the 31-year-old to miss time.

  • Alex McGough QB | GB

Alex McGough: Inks practice squad deal

McGough signed with the Texans' practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

McGough spent training camp with the Texans but couldn't beat out AJ McCarron for the backup job behind Deshaun Watson. He tried out with the Jets but opted to come back to Houston. If Watson or McCarron get banged up, McGough will be called up to the active roster.
