  • Kyle Allen QB | BUF

Football Team's Kyle Allen: Begins year as No. 2 QB

Washington lists Allen as its No. 2 quarterback heading into Sunday's season opener against the Eagles, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.

Though Alex Smith will be included on the 53-man roster, head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged the veteran signal-caller still needs some time to shake off the rust while he returns from the career-threatening leg injury he suffered in November 2018. As a result, Allen will begin his first campaign in Washington as the top backup to Dwayne Haskins, who emerged as the team's starting quarterback coming out of training camp.

  • Marcus Mariota QB | WAS

Raiders' Marcus Mariota: Has pectoral strain

Mariota, who was placed on injured reserve Monday, is dealing with a strained pectoral, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

After tending to shoulder and ankle injuries in the offseason, Mariota was hindered by an unknown issue for the later stages of training camp. The Raiders "hope" that the time away from the field helps him heal and eventually handle backup QB duties behind Derek Carr, but those will be covered by Nathan Peterman for at least the rest of September

  • Marcus Mariota QB | WAS

Raiders' Marcus Mariota: Placed on IR

The Raiders placed Mariota (undisclosed) on injured reserve Monday, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

The nature of Mariota's injury isn't known, but the issue isn't related to the shoulder and ankle concerns he dealt with during the offseason, according to coach Jon Gruden. With Mariota out for at least the first three games of the season, Nathan Peterman will serve as Derek Carr's backup.

  • Marcus Mariota QB | WAS

Raiders' Marcus Mariota: Still no practice reps

Mariota (undisclosed) didn't practice Monday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.

Mariota dealt with shoulder and ankle woes during the offseason, but coach Jon Gruden has indicated the quarterback's current issue is unrelated, calling him day-to-day back on Aug. 26. Still, Mariota remains away from the field, leaving Nathan Peterman as the only reserve QB on the Raiders roster behind Derek Carr.

  • Mitch Trubisky QB | TEN

Bears' Mitchell Trubisky: Officially named starting QB

Head coach Matt Nagy announced that Trubisky will start Week 1 versus the Lions, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN reports.

The news was leaked a couple of days prior to the official announcement, but now it's set in stone that Trubisky will be afforded another opportunity to live up to his second-overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. Nagy emphasized multiple times that Trubisky won the competition on his own merit, relaying that the quarterback improved his footwork, accuracy and command this offseason. Nevertheless, his performance in 2019 was uninspiring with 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over 15 games, and if he begins the year with the same caliber of play, Nagy could quickly shift to backup QB Nick Foles, who apparently had a strong camp as well.

  • Mike White QB | CAR

Mike White: Lands on practice squad

The Jets signed White to the practice squad Sunday, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com reports.

The Jets also gave David Fales a spot on the practice squad, so White will continue to see competition for an emergency gig. He also spent the 2019 campaign developing on New York's practice squad.

  • Brandon Allen QB | NYG

Brandon Allen: Lands on practice squad

Allen cleared waivers and signed with the Bengals' practice squad Sunday, Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The Broncos started Allen under center in three games last year, and the results were discouraging, as he completed just 46.4 percent of his passes for 515 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He'll stick with the Bengals' practice squad as the franchise's No. 3 quarterback behind Joe Burrow and Ryan Finley.

  • Joshua Dobbs QB | NE

Steelers' Joshua Dobbs: Back in Steel City

Dobbs was claimed by the Steelers on Sunday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Dobbs was a surprise cut by the Jaguars on Saturday, but the Tennessee product will reunite with his former club. Dobbs failed to see the field with the Jaguars last campaign, as the team elected to keep rookie Jake Luton as the only backup behind Gardner Minshew. Dobbs will join a crowded quarterback room, with Devlin Hodges and Mason Rudolph joining him as backups to Ben Roethlisberger.

  • Brett Rypien QB | MIN

Brett Rypien: Fails to make final cut

Rypien was waived by the Broncos on Saturday, Aric DiLalla of the team's official site reports.

Rypien dressed as the backup for the Broncos for three games in 2019, but did not appear in any of them. Rypien failed to make an impression with the coaching staff for even a third-string role, as the Broncos will roll with Drew Lock and Jeff Driskel on the depth chart to start the 2020 campaign.

  • Tyler Huntley QB | BAL

Tyler Huntley: Fails to make final cut

Huntley was cut by Baltimore on Saturday, Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Huntley inked a contract as an undrafted free agent out of Utah this offseason, but, as evidenced by this news, he failed to make a lasting impression. With Huntley out of the picture, the Ravens will roll with Robert Griffin and Trace McSorley as primary backups behind Lamar Jackson.
