  • Mitch Trubisky QB | TEN

Bears' Mitchell Trubisky: Shows well in preseason debut

Trubisky completed 18 of 25 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown with a 103.1 quarterback run during Thursday's preseason opener against Denver.

After making just 13 collegiate starts, Trubisky is expected to spend the season fine-tuning his craft as Mike Glennon's backup. Trubisky is considered the quarterback of the future, and with the Bears in a clear rebuild, the 2017 No. 2 overall selection could land behind center at some point this year. However, even with Thursday's encouraging showing in mind, Trubisky's unlikely to be a reliable fantasy asset this season.

  • Paxton Lynch QB | PIT

Broncos' Paxton Lynch: Throws for 42 yards in tune-up

Lynch completed six of nine pass attempts for just 42 yards during Thursday's preseason opener against Chicago.

The 2016 first-round selection has a lot to prove after struggling in his two starts last season, and he certainly didn't impress Thursday. Lynch owns the size and athleticism teams covet in a franchise quarterback, but Denver has a more polished signal-caller in Trevor Siemian who is capable of running the offense until Lynch acclimatizes to the pro game. It's far too early to rule out Lynch as the Week 1 starter, as he has significantly more upside than Siemian, so this quarterback battle projects to linger throughout training camp and could even pop back up during the season. Lynch is expected to start next week's preseason game against the 49ers, and his performance could have a significant impact on the depth chart entering the season.

  • Trevor Siemian QB | ATL

Broncos' Trevor Siemian: Passes test in preseason opener

Siemian completed six of seven pass attempts for 51 yards during Thursday's preseason opener against Chicago.

Siemian's smooth debut probably lengthened his leg up on 2016 first-round selection Paxton Lynch to be the Week 1 starter. Lynch didn't stand out by completing six of nine passes for just 42 yards Thursday, and he's probably still too raw to effectively lead the offense. While Siemian's fantasy and real-world upside is capped, being the less volatile option behind center of the two will probably secure his edge entering the season. Don't forget, he started 14 games in 2016. Unfortunately, it's also way too early to count Lynch out yet, and there could be multiple chapters to Denver's 2017 quarterback battle.

  • Patriots' Jimmy Garoppolo: Starts preseason strong

Garoppolo completed 22-of-28 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns while adding a three-yard carry in Thursday's preseason opener against the Jaguars.

Garoppolo worked until halfway through the third quarter before giving way to Jacoby Brissett. He was able to rack up excellent numbers in that span even with many offensive regulars joining starting quarterback Tom Brady on the sideline, tossing touchdowns to Austin Carr and K.J. Maye. Garoppolo remains entrenched as Tom Brady's top backup, but in the event of an injury to his veteran counterpart, Garoppolo would merit fantasy attention, considering the talented collection of skill players on the Patriots' roster.

  • Bills' Nathan Peterman: Promising pro debut

Peterman, who entered Thursday's preseason game after starter Tyrod Taylor and backup T.J. Yates departed, completed 13 of 25 passes for 112 yards, one touchdown and a 77.4 rating.

Although Peterman outperformed No. 2 man Yates, the latter has been the better QB throughout camp, and given his NFL experience, is still the favorite to enter the season as the primary backup. Consequently, Peterman would likely have to notably outdistance Yates in all four exhibitions to even be in the discussion, and it's still unlikely he'd vault over the veteran unless the Bills saw enough to cut Yates altogether.

  • Matt McGloin QB | KC

Eagles' Matt McGloin: Gains experience in offense

McGloin completed 28 of 42 passes for 205 yards and an interception in Thursday's preseason game versus the Packers.

McGloin entered the game after Carson Wentz led Philadelphia to a touchdown on its opening drive. Despite playing most of the contest, McGloin's 4.9 yards per attempt left much to be desired. With 28 completions, however, the veteran offseason addition definitely gained valuable experience within the Eagles offense.

  • Tyrod Taylor QB | GB

Bills' Tyrod Taylor: Plays three series in preseason opener

Taylor completed five of eight passes for 46 yards during Thursday's preseason opener against the Vikings.

Taylor's stat line obviously doesn't jump off the page, but he did key in on Sammy Watkins for three completions during Buffalo's first drive, and then the two connected on a nine-yard pass to put the Bills in position to kick a field goal late in the first quarter. Watkins staying healthy and productive will be a significant boon to Taylor's fantasy value, and it's encouraging that the duo is showing chemistry again in game action. While Taylor projects as a middling quarterback option in the majority of settings, this will be his third season at the helm of the offense, and he offers sneaky upside with his legs. He's rushed for 1,148 yards and 10 touchdowns over the past two years, after all.

  • Sam Bradford QB | MIN

Vikings' Sam Bradford: Completes five of seven passes Thursday

Bradford completed five of seven passes for 35 yards during Thursday's preseason opener against the Bills.

Bradford played three series against the Bills and didn't attempt a single throw downfield. After posting a 7.0 yards per pass attempt last season, and being sacked twice Thursday, he's likely to continue trying to get the ball out of his hands quickly behind Minnesota's porous offensive line. However, a short passing attack makes him extremely efficient, and the running game also received a boost this offseason with the additions of Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray. Just keep in mind that game managers like Bradford typically struggle to translate their real-world strengths into consistent fantasy results.

  • Connor Shaw QB | CHI

Bears' Connor Shaw: Not expected to play Thursday

Shaw (lower leg) isn't expected to play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Broncos, Adam Hoge of WGN Radio reports.

As expected, Shaw will take a seat as he recovers from minor ankle surgery, leaving all the reps Thursday for Mike Glennon, Mark Sanchez and Mitchell Trubisky.

  • Kirk Cousins QB | LV

Redskins' Kirk Cousins: Will see very little action Thursday

Cousins won't play more than 1-2 series during Thursday's preseason contest in Baltimore, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.

Playing under the franchise tag for a second consecutive campaign, Cousins is again betting on himself to parlay performance into a massive contract. In the Redskins' first exhibition, he'll only see the field for a brief stretch, instead focusing on game situation and working with head coach Jay Gruden on the headset for the first time. Once Cousins' time on the field comes to an end, Colt McCoy and Nate Sudfeld will take charge of the offense for the rest of the evening.
