  • Steelers' Calvin Austin: On track for season opener

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that he expects Austin (abdomen) to be available for Sunday's season opener versus the Jets, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.

Austin didn't play in any preseason games while tending to an abdominal injury, but he's apparently made good progress in his recovery over the past few weeks and should be ready to suit up Sunday. Before he's officially cleared for Week 1, he'll likely need to put in a full practice by Friday. Per Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com, the 2022 fourth-round pick is listed as a starter at receiver alongside DK Metcalf in the latest unofficial depth chart. In addition to potentially being limited by the injury and getting pushed for playing time by second-year wideout Roman Wilson, Austin's snap and target counts could be suppressed if the Steelers lean heavily on two-tight end sets featuring Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith (knee).

  • Stefon Diggs WR | NE

Patriots' Stefon Diggs: Tracking toward playing Week 1

Head coach Mike Vrabel said that, as of Tuesday, Diggs (knee) will "be out there" for the Patriots' season opener Sunday versus the Raiders, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

Though Diggs didn't suit up for any preseason games, he doesn't appear to have hit any snags in his recovery from the torn ACL he sustained Oct. 27, 2024 while playing with the Texans. After signing with New England in March, the veteran wideout avoided placement on the PUP list ahead of training camp and didn't experience any apparent restrictions in practices. The Patriots' first injury report Wednesday will clarify whether Diggs was a full participant in practice. If he opens the week without limitations, he should be ready to serve as New England's No. 1 receiver Sunday.

  • DeVonta Smith WR | PHI

Eagles' DeVonta Smith: Not on injury report

Smith (groin) doesn't appear on the Eagles' injury report in advance of Thursday's game against the Cowboys.

That's also the case with A.J. Brown (hamstring), so the Eagles will indeed have both wideouts available for Week 1 action. As the coming season approaches, Smith and Brown remain the team's clear-cut top two options at their position, with Jahan Dotson, John Metchie and Darius Cooper rounding out Philadelphia's WR corps.

  • A.J. Brown WR | PHI

Eagles' A.J. Brown: Ready for Week 1

Brown (hamstring) doesn't appear on the Eagles' injury report ahead of Thursday's game against the Cowboys.

The same applies to DeVonta Smith (groin), which paves the way for the Eagles' top two wideouts to be available for Week 1 action. Brown is coming off a 2024 regular season in which he recorded a 67-1,079-7 line on 97 targets in 13 contests and is in line to continue in his key role in a Philadelphia passing offense that runs largely through him, Smith and TE Dallas Goedert.

  • Marvin Mims WR | DEN

Broncos' Marvin Mims: Back at practice, as expected

Mims (groin) is participating in Monday's practice, Luca Evans of The Denver Post reports.

Broncos coach Sean Payton said after Mims was forced to depart last Wednesday's practice early that he was expected to retake the field Monday, so it's encouraging to see the 2023 second-rounder following that timetable without any setbacks. By all indications, Mims is only dealing with a minor groin injury and remains on track for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Titans.

  • Chargers' Quentin Johnston: Clears concussion protocol

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Johnston has been fully cleared from concussion protocol, Chris Roling of SI.com reports.

Johnston sustained a concussion during a preseason loss to the Rams on Aug. 16, but the wideout appears poised to be available for Friday's season opener against the Chiefs. Look for added context on that front to arrive once the Chargers' first official injury report is posted Tuesday.

  • Jalen Coker WR | CAR

Panthers' Jalen Coker: Expected to miss 4-to-6 games

Coker (quadriceps), who was placed on IR on Saturday, is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 games in his recovery, David Newton of ESPN reports.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Coker has a "serious quad strain," per Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer. While the second-year wideout's placement on IR allows him to retake the field after a minimum of only four games, it sounds like his return could be postponed until as late as Week 7 against the Jets on Sunday, Oct. 19. With Carolina also having traded Adam Thielen to Minnesota, the team inked veteran wideout Hunter Renfrow to the active roster Saturday to help provide depth behind Tetairoa McMillan (hamstring) and Xavier Legette.

  • 49ers' Jauan Jennings: Retakes practice field

Jennings (calf) is participating in practice Monday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Jennings, who continues to seek a new contract with the 49ers after having requested a trade, is back on the practice field for the first time since late July. General manager John Lynch said in late August that the team doesn't intend to trade Jennings, but he spoke of the wide receiver's availability for Week 1 in uncertain terms. Even if Jennings is only practicing on a limited basis, his return to the field is a significant step in the right direction. Wednesday's first official practice report of the week will shed more light on Jennings' chances of suiting up Sunday versus the Seahawks.

  • Juwann Winfree WR | HOU

    Juwann Winfree: Out in Houston

Winfree (hand) was waived from injured reserve with an injury settlement Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Winfree was placed on IR with a broken hand in late August, but the Texans have since decided to move on from the 28-year-old. The Colorado product last saw regular-season action with the Colts in 2023, failing to haul in his only target across eight games. Winfree is now free to sign elsewhere once he's fully healthy again.

  • Hunter Renfrow WR | CAR

Panthers' Hunter Renfrow: Will suit up Sunday

Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Monday that Renfrow will play Sunday versus the Jaguars, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.

Renfrow failed to secure a spot on Carolina's initial 53-man roster but was re-signed by the team Saturday in the wake of Jalen Coker (quadriceps) being placed on IR and ruled out for at least the first four games of the season. The Panthers also traded Adam Thielen to Minnesota on Thursday, meaning after spending the offseason with the team, Renfrow now is competing with just David Moore and Jimmy Horn for opportunities behind Tetairoa McMillan (hamstring) and Xavier Legette in Week 1.
