Johnsson agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Skelleftea AIK (Sweden) on Thursday, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports. Johnsson was released from his contract with the Penguins in order to allow him to complete a move abroad. Selected by the Maple Leafs in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Draft, the 28-year-old winger saw action in 259 NHL games with Toronto and New Jersey in which he garnered 48 goals and 68 assists. With this move, Johnsson has likely closed the door on returning to the NHL in the future.

Johnsson was put on unconditional waivers Wednesday for the purpose of terminating his contract, Dave Molinari of Pittsburgh Hockey Now reports. Johnsson signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with Pittsburgh on July 7. The 28-year-old didn't make Pittsburgh's roster out of training camp and hasn't played for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton yet. He has 48 goals and 116 points in 259 career NHL contests, but he recorded just three assists in 13 outings between New Jersey and San Jose last year.

Pittsburgh put Johnsson on waivers Thursday, per Chris Johnston of TSN. Johnsson contributed nine goals and 30 points in 36 AHL contests with Utica in 2022-23. He also had three assists in 13 outings between New Jersey and San Jose. Unless Johnsson is claimed off waivers, he will probably start the campaign with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Johnsson (lower body) skated on a line with Reilly Smith and Evgeni Malkin at Thursday's practice. Johnsson is not only healthy after missing time with a lower-body injury to end 2022-23, but he's getting a significant look to start camp. It may be a temporary gig with Jake Guentzel (ankle) still recovering from surgery, but it's encouraging to see Johnsson working at right wing with prominent forwards. If he can win that job in training camp, he may have some deep-league appeal in fantasy.

Johnsson (lower body) signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Penguins on Friday. Johnsson had three assists, seven hits and five blocks in 13 games between New Jersey and San Jose last season. He also contributed nine goals and 30 points in 36 AHL contests with Utica. The 28-year-old didn't play past March 20 because of a lower-body injury. Johnsson will likely compete for a bottom-six spot in Pittsburgh during training camp.
