McElhinney will defend the blue paint during Friday's home game versus the Stars, Bryan Burns of the Lightning's official site reports. McElhinney hasn't been great in limited action with the Lightning this season, compiling a 4-5-2 record while posting a 2.91 GAA and an .879 save percentage in 11 appearances. He'll attempt to secure his fifth victory of the campaign in a home matchup with a Dallas squad that's 8-11-6 on the road this year.

McElhinney stopped all 15 shots he faced in regulation and overtime but only four of eight in the shootout during Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Red Wings. The Bolts' defense did everything it could to give McElhinney an easy afternoon, but the offense couldn't solve Thomas Greiss at the other end of the ice. The veteran backup netminder has a lackluster 4-5-2 record with a 2.91 GAA and .879 save percentage on the season, and it wouldn't be a shock if Tampa Bay looked for a more reliable No. 2 behind Andrei Vasilevskiy in the offseason.

He'll attempt to earn his fifth win of the season in a favorable road matchup with a Detroit team that's averaging only 2.42 goals per game at home this campaign, 28th in the NHL.

McElhinney made 25 saves in a 3-1 win over the Blue Jackets on Thursday. The only goal he gave up was a Seth Jones point shot, but Jack Roslovic was standing in front of him as a screen and McElhinney didn't even see the puck. Otherwise, he was sharp. McEhinney won't get many more starts -- the net belongs to workhorse Andrei Vasilevskiy.
